‘Iolani’s Okamoto joins the home run club

By Nick Abramo on March 10, 2017

It was sheer joy for Ashlyn Okamoto when the ball left her bat and sailed over the left-center field fence at the Kamehameha softball field. The ‘Iolani senior shortstop is not known for power hitting. After a 4-4 tie against Kamehameha on Friday, both head coach Dean Yonamine and assistant Lois Manin said they thought it was her first home run. And they were right. Okamoto shared that information a little later. “It’s the first time I’ve ever hit it […]

Campbell turns up the heat in Kapolei

By Nick Abramo on March 4, 2017

It was muggy hot in Kapolei on Friday, and a bunch of girls were out there playing an OIA softball season opener. The top two teams in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser poll, no less. Rivals. There was something missing on the Kapolei bench, however. No Tony Saffery. The head coach who brought a state title to the Hurricanes in 2004 and then took the teal-and-black clad team to the D-I state final a year ago was not there. It turns out […]

Pearl City OF Au shows extraordinary instincts

By Nick Abramo on March 2, 2017

OK, getting your softball highlight on ESPN’s SportsCenter is one thing, but … how about making four amazing catches in one game. Pearl City’s Taylor Au had a game to remember Tuesday night in a 10-0, six-inning softball win over Nanakuli at Central Oahu Regional Park. The freshman made not one, not two, not three, but four spectacular grabs from her left-field position. And you read that right — freshman. In the history of baseball/softball, what she did was rare and […]

By Billy Hull on February 21, 2017

Campbell senior Jocelyn Alo, the reigning Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State position player of the year and Gatorade Hawaii player of the year, was named to the Max Preps preseason All-America softball team on Tuesday. Alo, who has signed to play at Oklahoma next year, is one of four catchers named to the team. Last season, Alo did not make an error in 31 games and hit .612 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs for the state champion Sabers. Alo hit […]

Campbell’s Alo signs with Sooners

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 10, 2016

Jocelyn Alo is going from one championship program to another. The Campbell catcher helped lead the Sabers to the Division I state title in May and signed with reigning NCAA champion Oklahoma on Wednesday. Alo was named the Star-Advertiser All-State Position Player of the Year as a junior and joins an Oklahoma program that has won three national championships under coach Patty Gasso and two in the last four years. They went 57-8 last season and edged Auburn 2-1 in […]

The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field and it distinguishes Alo as Hawaii’s best high school softball player. Sabers finish No. 22 in national Top 25

By Nick Abramo on May 25, 2016

Campbell did not go undefeated, but if it had, it’s a good bet the Sabers would be in the Top 10 nationally. The Sabers (18-1) finished at No. 22 in the CBS/MaxPreps Xcellent 25 softball rankings after winning their second straight Division I state championship last week. Campbell, as MaxPreps pointed out in a recent post, won their last five games by a 46-7 run differential. That outburst came after the team’s only loss — 5-4 to Kapolei in the OIA […]
