Hope not lost at Kapolei in wild OIA West

By Paul Honda on March 26, 2017

For any coach, even Stacie Mahoe, it was not an easy task to embrace. Yet, nobody knows more about the Kapolei Hurricanes softball program. With the retirement of Tony Saffrey, who guided the ‘Canes to the OIA crown last season, as well as in ’04 and ’05, Mahoe was tabbed to take over a largely successful program after 14 seasons as an assistant coach. She was also an interim head coach for a season along the way, but that, of […]

‘Iolani softball thriving on late-inning drama

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 22, 2017

Two late-inning rallies over the last two days left ‘Iolani tied atop the ILH Division I softball standings. The seventh-ranked Raiders forced extra innings before pulling out an 8-7 win over Punahou in the eighth on Tuesday. They followed that up by erasing a two-run deficit in the sixth in a 4-2 home victory over No. 4 Maryknoll on Wednesday. “The first thing one of the coaches said in our huddle was, ‘stop giving me gray hairs,’” said Iolani’s Kenedi […]

Pearl City is new No. 1 in softball

By Hawaii Prep World on March 20, 2017

According to the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 released Monday, an ILH vs. OIA West softball classic would be quite a big deal. The top eight teams in the rankings belong in either league with the OIA West holding down the top two spots. Defending state champion Campbell is no longer the top-ranked team after losing 2-1 last Tuesday to new-No. 1 Pearl City, which is the only undefeated team in the OIA West left heading into this week’s […]

An ideal example of Mililani’s ‘little things’ lesson

By Nick Abramo on March 20, 2017

The Mililani softball roster is on an 8×11 white piece of paper with mostly black type. At the bottom of the page, there are a list reminders for the team in its day-to-day effort to improve. A few of the examples are in red type highlighted in yellow, and one of them reads, “Little things make big things happen.” The late John Wooden — the legendary UCLA basketball coach — is the originator of that quote, but the lesson was learned, painfully, […]

Punahou softball in semis of elite tourney

By Jerry Campany on March 17, 2017

The Punahou softball team is hanging with some of the best programs in Arizona this week. The Buffanblu beat Mountain Ridge 8-4 to reach the semifinals of the Desert Mountain Softball Invitational in Arizona on Friday. Punahou pitcher Bailey Akimseu surrendered a three-run home run in the first inning but erased it with a three-run shot of her own in the bottom of the inning. Jolie Fujita added two RBIs with a single in the fourth inning to give the […]

Mililani girls prepare for Campbell challenge

By Nick Abramo on March 17, 2017

Two teams — Campbell and Mililani — have won five of the last eight Division I softball state tournaments, so one can bet that a lot is riding on Saturday’s game at the McKinley field. Both teams are 3-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West and in a tight race with Pearl City (4-0) and Leilehua (3-2). The Trojans are coming off a convincing 7-1 home win over Kapolei on Thursday and will get an idea of where they stack up against […]

Kaaialii, Yamaguchi lead “upset” of Sabers

By Paul Honda on March 14, 2017

In their ace pitcher’s eyes, a come-from-behind 2-1 win over two-time defending state champion Campbell was not an upset. Pearl City senior Tyanna “Peanut Butter” Kaaialii was potent against Campbell, mowing down 10 batters with just two walks and one hit batter, finishing with a three-hitter as the Chargers improved to 4-0 in the difficult OIA West on Tuesday afternoon. It took a botched ground ball by Campbell’s normally reliable infield to spark Pearl City’s sixth-inning comeback. That led to […]

More questions in baseball than softball

By Billy Hull on March 14, 2017

We’re closing in on a full month into the softball and baseball regular seasons and the two sports seem to be shaping out very differently. In softball, there’s no doubt who everyone is chasing. The defending state champion Campbell Sabers were a unanimous No. 1 pick in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 rankings and nothing has changed since. Despite playing in a tough OIA West, the Sabers have rolled to a 3-0 start outscoring quality opponents by a […]
