Abe, who finished just outside the HPW pound-for-pound top 10 heading into states, is in the state final for the third straight year but has yet to win after finishing runner-up at 107 pounds each of the previous two years. Pineda-Abaya has taken out the No. 2 seed and the No. 3 seed to get to the finals. Abe defeated Pineda-Abaya by an identical 3-2 score in the semifinals of the OIA championships and the final of the Officials tournament.
Tied 0-0 after 1. Abe starts the second period on bottom. Pineda-Abaya keeps her down. Scoreless in the third period. Abe shoots for the leg with 10 seconds to go but nothing. Overtime. Still nothing. We go to a 30-second fifth period. Pineda-Abaya starts on bottom. Pineda-Abaya with the escape at 20 seconds and then gets control to go up 2-0. Abe’s turn on the bottom. She gets the escape but doesn’t gain control. Pineda-Abaya wins 2-1.

Casaban pinned the top seed in the semifinals while Fautanu survived a 3-2 decision against the No. 2 seed. Fautanu was runner-up 182 pounds last season.
Fautanu scores a takedown but it was outside of the circle. Casaban returns the favor but also out of the circle. 0-0 after 1. Fautanu with an escape in the second period and Casaban gets it back early in the third. 1-1. Casaban almost gets a takedown but Fautanu explodes back up at the 1-minute mark. Fautanu with the takedown at 40 seconds. 3-1 Fautanu.

The first final of the night between the top two seeds pits Miguel, who is making her first appearance in the top six, against Hamilton, who has pinned her way to the final in less than two minutes in each match. Hamilton finished fifth at 122 two years ago and runner-up at 127 last year.
Hamilton gets off to a huge start with a takedown and a near fall for a 5-0 lead. Miguel with a great move and nearly pins Hamilton while on her back. She then flips over, takes control, and gets the pin at 1:52. Arena gots nuts. Great performance.

THIRD PLACE: Laulii Iosefa (McKinley) def. Makananui Kaahanui (Molokai), 4-3
CHAMPIONSHIP: (1) Micah Tynanes (Campbell) def. (6) Islaey Busch-Matuu (Castle), Fall 3:28
Tynanes entered the tournament No. 3 in our pound-for-pound rankings and is looking for his second consecutive state title after winning at 195 last year. Busch-Matuu has placed for the first time in his career but was pinned by Tynanes in both the OIA championship (1:23) and Officials (4:45).

Tynanes scores an early takedown and he leads 2-0 after the first period. Tynanes shoots for a single-leg and gets the knee down before going out for two points. Tynanes gets the pin at 3:28.

Alo, the No. 1 girls pound-for-pound wrestler, is back in the final trying to add a second state title to her 2015 win at 122 pounds. An injury hampered her last season when she finished third at states. Ikei was fifth at 122 pounds last year. This is a rematch of the OIA championship this year won by Alo, 11-5.
Alo’s first takedown comes 53 seconds in and leads 2-0 after 1. Ikei starts on bottom in the second period. Alo gets the pin at 3:02.

Kinimaka is trying to become Campbell’s third state champion, joining Kalissa Pundyke (2014) and Rachel-Jean Factora (2011). This is the only final between two unseeded wrestlers.

0-0 after the first period. Keahi on the bottom to start second period. Keahi awarded a two-point takedown escaping from the bottom but it’s changed to a one-point escape. Kinimaka nearly gets a takedown but Keahi fights it off and scores two points on her own. 3-1 after two as Keahi penalized for intentional force out I believe. Kinimaka starts on bottom. Keahi gets pin at 4:28.

Hunter Nagatani would be Waipahu’s first champ since Brandon Mina in 2007. Torigoe would be Iolani’s first champ under 113 pounds since Nick Matayoshi in 2005.

Torigoe shoots for the single leg and gets the takedown with 22 seconds left in the first period to lead 2-0. Nagatani with a big reversal near the end of the second period and he gets two more on the near fall to go up 4-2 into the third period. Torigoe starts on bottom. Restart with 1:17 to go and again at :59. More restarts. WHOA! Torigoe escapes and gets a near fall with a second on the clock. He ties it at 4. Extra time we go. Nagatani almost gets the takedown but Torigoe slides out and gets two for the win. Great match.

THIRD PLACE: Nina Seoane (Pearl City) def. Shannon Jaramillo (Lahainaluna), 2-0
CHAMPIONSHIP: (1) Angela Peralta (Radford) def. (6) Kaleinani Makuaole (Waianae), 7-4 (six periods)
Peralta, the No. 2 pound-for-pound girls wrestler, is trying to become the first Radford girl to claim multiple state titles. After scoring two pins in under a minute, Peralta was tested a bit by Tongi (11-6) in the semis. Peralta pinned Makuaole at Paani (1:40) and in the OIA final (:53).

Peralta leads 4-2 after one. Makuaole giving Peralta all she can handle. She ties it at four. Peralta in some trouble to end the second period. Tied 4-4. Trainers out to check Peralta with 1:25 left in the third. We go to overtime. Now we start the fifth with Peralta on the bottom. Both wrestlers look exhausted. Peralta with the escape at 18 seconds. Now a takedown right under the gun to go up 7-4. Makuaole’s turn on bottom. She nearly gets out at the end but Peralta holds on for the win to become the first Ram with multiple state titles.

Damien is going for its third state champ in three years, a program record. Connor Villarmia won the last two years. Kysen and brother Zayren are trying to become the fifth and sixth Terukina’s to win a state championship.

Cabanban is trying to become the first three-time champ from Saint Louis since Brandon Lowi n 2005. The last state title for the Crusaders before he came along was Drake Medeiros in 2008. Garcia is trying to become Moanalua’s first two-time champ since Aukai Pruett in 1993 and only the third ever. Cabanban is No. 1 pound-for-pound and hasn’t lost since Officials his freshman season. Garcia is No. 6 P4P.
A little buzz in the arena for this one. Cabanban gets two 30 seconds in and leads 2-0 after one. Garcia on the bottom to start the second and he gets up quick. 2-1. Cabanban gets another takedown and a Garcia escape makes it 4-2 through two. Cabanban on bottom to start third period. Garcia lets Cabanban escape for a point knowing he needs something big late. Cabanban seemed to take that seriously and fires in for a quick takedown. 7-2 FINAL.

Tied 1-1 going into the final minute. Keopuhiwa gets the takedown but she’s out of bounds with 18 seconds to go. To the extra period we go. Fotu tries to bull rush Keopuhiwa again at the end of the round. Nothing. We go to the fifth. Fotu starts on bottom. She gets the escape and take down with 18 seconds remaining to go up 3-2. She holds Keopuhiwa down to take 3-2 lead into sixth period. Keopuhiwa starts on bottom. Keopuhiwa has to get up. Fotu moving back and forth not giving up an inch. It’s OVER. 3-2 in six periods.

Leong, a two-time OIA champion, won this in the OIA final, 6-4. Scoreless after the first period. Leong down to start the second period. Still scoreless a minute in. Mai just barely survives giving up any points at the end of the round. 0-0 going to the third. Mai on bottom. Mai escapes and leads 1-0 with 1:21 remaining. Leong comes back and gets the takedown with 16 seconds to go. Leong holds her down and pulls out a thriller, 2-1.

Navarro is No. 3 P4P and Gooman is No. 7 P4P.
Navarro has no problem scoring two points on the early takedown. Gooman with the reversal and takes position to tie the match at 2-2. Eventful first 40 seconds. 2-2 going into the second. Gooman starts on the bottom and does it again for the two points to take a 4-2 lead. It stays that way through two. Navarro lets Gooman up to start the third and then Gooman turns around and gets a takedown quickly. Impressive performance by the defending 102 state champ. 7-2 the final.

Encinas jumps out to the 2-0 lead with a takedown but Higa reverses position and gets the two points to make it 2-2 after one. Encinas spins out and gets on top with 40 seconds left in the second period after starting on bottom. She’s up 4-2. We’re even after two escapes with 36 seconds left in the third period. They are locked up in the center and Encinas gets the takedown with 15 seconds to go. Higa battles up and it looks like she gets Encinas down but the ref waves off the takedown and Encinas is your winner, 6-4.

Pascua in front with the takedown at 1:08 of the second period. Respicio gets the escape with 40 seconds to go and is down 4-3 to end the second. Respicio on the bottom to start the third period.
