A recent article by Paul Honda of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World mentioned that all of the seniors from the two-time reigning state champion Sabers softball team are going to be playing in college next year. Here is the list of Sabers and their plans for studies and ballplaying next fall: >> Cydney Curran, 2B, Cal State Bakersfield >> Alecia Kupihea, C, Olympic College (Bremerton, Wash.) >> Kiani Telles, OF, […]

Campbell rides Alo and Cervantes to crown

By Nick Abramo on May 14, 2016

If there is one rule the Honolulu Star-Advertiser goes by when it comes to picking a most valuable player, it’s that there can only be one. Having two people share that award is something to be avoided. If it’s a close call, the editors in charge will say, “Pick one.” So it was kinda funny when Star-Advertiser reporter Jason Kaneshiro looked over at me near the end of Campbell’s 12-2 win over Kapolei in the Division I state softball final […]

Saffery savors Kapolei’s ‘magical’ run

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 13, 2016

After completing a deep postseason run, Kapolei softball coach Tony Saffery is probably due some time off from the field. He’ll give himself one day before getting back on the dirt. “Summer season starts as soon as we’re done here. We practice on Sunday,” Saffery said with a laugh Friday night. “It’s back to work. “It’s like no rest for the weary. I love it though, I truly do. I love the kids.” Along with leading Kapolei during the high […]

Kapolei storms back to reach state final

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 13, 2016

It took five innings, but Kapolei found its timing just in time to put together a rally that propelled the Hurricanes into Friday’s title game of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship. Outside of Sadie Kapaku-You’s swing on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning in Thursday’s semifinal game, Kapolei was kept off balance by Pearl City junior Tyanna Kaaialii’s offspeed offerings while the Chargers executed at the plate to take a 5-1 lead. Kapaku-You’s home run […]

Campbell gets another shot at Kapolei

By Nick Abramo on May 12, 2016

Campbell head coach Michael Hermosura was watching the late game with keen interest Thursday night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. In the early game, Hermosura’s Sabers rallied from a one-run deficit to beat Mililani 5-2 in the Division I softball state semifinals. Later on, sitting on the first-base side, he watched Kapolei — the only team to beat Campbell (17-1) this season (in the OIA championship game) — successfully rally to squash Pearl City’s upset hopes, 6-5. Now, the Sabers’ biggest […]

Today’s schedule (with Star-Advertiser rankings) — No. 2 Campbell vs. No. 4 Mililani, 4:30 p.m. No. 1 Kapolei vs. No. 6 Pearl City, 7 p.m. >> Campbell swept the regular-season series with Mililani.
