Cervantes’ gem caps day of dominance

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 12, 2016

Danielle Cervantes cringed a bit while acknowledging she had a no-hitter on her mind late in Campbell’s 8-0 win over Kamehameha on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The junior right-hander took the no-no into the sixth inning before giving up a clean two-out single to Kamehameha’s Kalaihoku Kaneshiro. But Cervantes closed the inning with her 14th strikeout then struck out the side in the seventh to cap a day of remarkable pitching performances in the quarterfinal round of the […]

Pearl City keeps the no-hitters coming

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 11, 2016

No-hitters have become almost commonplace for Pearl City. Tyanna Kaaialii and Kristin Frost faced one batter over the minimum in the Chargers’ third no-hitter in their last six games and Pearl City rolled into the semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship with a 14-0 win in five innings over fourth-seeded Waiakea today. After holding off ‘Iolani in Tuesday’s late game, Kaaialii got the start today and struck out the side in the first inning with Waiakea’s lone baserunner […]

Mililani’s Kim strikes out 17 in no-hitter

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 11, 2016

Mililani senior Aubree Kim threw a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts and the Trojans advanced to the semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship with a 6-0 win over third-seeded Maui today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. A day after striking out 16 while throwing 157 pitches in a win over Kaiser, Kim turned in a far more efficient performance while recording the second no-hitter in a state tournament in her career. She threw the first as a sophomore in […]

State softball: OIA West sweeps first round

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 11, 2016

The opening day of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship served as testament to the strength and depth of the OIA West. Of the division’s seven teams, five will be among the eight playing in the state tournament’s quarterfinal round on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The OIA West went 4-0 in the first round on Tuesday with Leilehua, Campbell, Mililani and Pearl City advancing. Kapolei, the tournament’s top seed and OIA champion, had a bye in the first […]

Saffery: OIA champ Kapolei is even-keeled

By Nick Abramo on May 9, 2016

Tony Saffery and the Kapolei Hurricanes have experience being the top seed from the Oahu Interscholastic Association at the state tournament, but it was 11 years ago. So that means the last time his softball team was league champions, the girls on the team this season were between the ages of 3 and 7. The Hurricanes are the top-seeded team and have a bye in the Division I first round of the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships that start Tuesday. On […]

Agbayani goes the distance for ‘Iolani

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 4, 2016

‘Iolani softball coach Dean Yonamine second-guessed himself after pulling Aleia Agbayani early in a loss to Pac-Five last week. So he had no doubts about leaving the freshman in the circle late in Wednesday’s ILH playoff game against Punahou. The 10-5 loss to Pac-Five to close the regular season left the Raiders second in the ILH regular season standings, forcing them to play their way into the state tournament through the league’s single-elimination playoff. After edging Mid-Pacific on Monday, ‘Iolani […]

Kapolei nestles into top softball spot

By Nick Abramo on May 2, 2016

For the first time all season, the No. 1 team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 softball poll is not Campbell. Kapolei beat the Sabers 5-4 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association semifinals and then edged Mililani 6-5 in the championship game. All three teams – along with the other OIA semifinalist, Pearl City — will be competing in the upcoming state tournament. The Hurricanes (13-3) received nine of 14 first-place votes. Campbell (14-1) fell to No. 2 and still got three […]

Hurricanes find redemption in the rain

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 1, 2016

It was somewhat fitting that the final out of Saturday’s OIA Division I softball championship ended up in the glove of Kapolei left fielder Dallas Pollard-Brownell. The inning prior, a ball that popped out of her grip helped position Mililani for a third straight OIA crown. But the Hurricanes rallied in the top of the seventh inning with the go-ahead run scoring on Pollard-Brownell’s grounder. Mililani threatened again in the bottom of the inning with a two-out double, but Pollard-Brownell […]
