Golden Valley: Nanakuli clutches up

By Paul Honda on May 1, 2016

It took 6 innings to figure this out. Actually, it took more. Down to their last strike, Nanakuli — epic, juggernaut, invincible Nanakuli — was about to get tapped out by nemesis Aiea in the OIA Division II championship game. AGAIN. Most sportswriters would have written a lead paragraph already, and much more. After being mesmerized by Aiea’s comeback ace, Poamai Tuli for 6 2/3 innings, normal teenaged kids might wilt and cave in. Not Nanakuli. Three hits and a […]

One strike away: Tuli nearly delivers

By Paul Honda on May 1, 2016

Alan Higuchi is looking ahead. His Aiea softball team is serious running for the Division II state championship — even after losing to unbeaten and No. 8-ranked Nanakuli on Saturday in the OIA title game. “They’ll be fine. I’m glad we have more games to play,” Higuchi said moments after the contest at Tiger Stadium at McKinley High School. Na Alii (10-5) had a superlative effort from Poamaikaikeikiokalani Tuli, a left-hander who had pitched her team to an OIA title […]

Mililani and Kapolei meet for OIA D-I title

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 30, 2016

This much is certain, the OIA Division I softball title will remain in the west for a seventh consecutive year. Whether it stays in Mililani for a third straight season or heads down to Kapolei for the first time since 2005, well, that figures to be a toss-up. The Trojans and Hurricanes split their regular season matchups in tight contests and meet for a third time on Saturday with the OIA Division I title at stake. Mililani will attempt to […]

Another no-no for Pearl City’s ‘Peanut Butter’

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 28, 2016

Tyanna “Peanut Butter” Kaaialii was 11 when she was given her distinctive nickname upon joining a team in California. Now 16, the Pearl City junior distinguished herself over the last two days by playing a leading role in back-to-back no-hitters for the Chargers. A day after throwing the first four innings in Pearl City’s combined no-hitter against Moanalua, Kaaialii tossed a complete-game no-no in the Chargers’ 8-0 win at Kaiser on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the OIA Division I […]

P.C., Moanalua gap widens (+ full box score)

By Nick Abramo on April 27, 2016

They came into Wednesday’s Oahu Interscholastic Association softball game with similar records, but when it was all over, the gap had widened considerably. Part of it is the division they play in. Pearl City went 6-6 in the OIA West softball standings. Moanalua went 5-7 in the East. The Chargers are seeded fourth and Na Menehune fifth. Close game, you would think, right? Didn’t turn out that way. Maybe that’s why many Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 voters are giving lots […]

Roosevelt fends off Waianae in wild seventh

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 27, 2016

Roosevelt and Waianae traded two-out rallies throughout a dramatic opening-round game in the OIA Division I softball playoffs on Wednesday before the host Rough Riders emerged with a 9-8 win at Stevenson Middle School. The Rough Riders and Seariders combined to score 10 runs with two out in the first-round game with Roosevelt delivering the final blow on D-Dre Wright’s walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh. Wright’s drive into the left-center gap to score Mika Emoto from second […]

Volleyball signees dominate letter of intent day

By Paul Honda on April 13, 2016

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Fifty high school seniors declared their future plans by signing letters of intent on Wednesday morning in another pristine and beautiful setting at the Honolulu Elks Lodge in Waikiki. That’s the good news. The bad? This was the final LOI signing event hosted by PIAA, a non-profit organization that will shut its “doors” soon to due a lack of funding. For now, the overflow crowd at the Elks […]

Kapaa walk-off helps ILH D-II softball

By Paul Honda on April 9, 2016

From the outside looking in, Cecil Hasegawa has a difficult time comprehending what has happened with the Kapaa softball program. Hasegawa, a longtime head coach at Pac-Five, says he doesn’t have any details about why six Kapaa players walked off the team last week. That forced the program to shut down, having played just four of its 12 Kauai Interscholastic Federation games. (Here is the full story in this morning’s Star-Advertiser.) “I’m sorry to see that happened, but that helped […]
