Pearl City could be close to breakthrough

By Nick Abramo on April 5, 2016

Pearl City is right in the middle of the pack of Oahu Interscholastic Association West softball. At 4-4, the Chargers have four convincing wins over the bottom feeders and four losses to the contenders. Two of those four losses were by scores of 5-3 against Kapolei and 2-1 against Mililani. Both of those opponents are ranked in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10. The game against the Trojans last week was oh-so-close. Pearl City pitcher Tyanna Kaaialii had a no-hitter going […]

Kapaa softball shuts down, ILH benefits

By Paul Honda on April 5, 2016

The future plans of at least two teams in two leagues have been impacted by what happened at Kapaa High School. Last Wednesday, six of Kapaa’s 11 players quit the softball team. The Warriors, who were 0-4 in Kauai Interscholastic Federation play with eight games remaining, then forfeited a doubleheader against Waimea on Saturday and have since shut down for the season. That is problematic, and the solution is already in process. >> The KIF is now down to two […]

By Nick Abramo on March 30, 2016

Campbell has been a unanimous No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 since the season began, and with good reason. Senior Elisa Favela, the reigning All-State player of the year who hits for both power and average and is […]

Sister Act: Elisa, Trinity Favela sparkle

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2016

There is sibling rivalry, but in this case, it’s more like peas in a pod. Sisters Elisa and Trinity Favela started for the top-ranked Campbell Sabers on Tuesday night in a 10-5 win over Pearl City. It marked the first start together at the high school level for Elisa, an ace pitcher and cleanup hitter, and left fielder Trinity. “We haven’t really played together in a game since we were younger,” Trinity said. “It was a great feeling.” Elisa Favela […]

Obara: Get rid of illegal pitch rule

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2016

“Oh, my God. That’s a five-run swing.” It’s hard to not feel for Pearl City softball coach Chad Obara, who saw a showdown with powerhouse Campbell turn into a 10-5 loss, fueled in part by the technical side of a pitching rule. “It’s the first time we’ve faced that type of tough pitching,” Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said. “Especially with ‘Peanut Butter’ (Tyanna Kaaialii) pitching.” Obara’s pitchers had battled and toiled in the rough OIA West, young Kaaialii and Kristin […]
