Waimea to honor 5 former athletes

Waimea will induct five athletes into its Menehune Legacy Hall of Honor at a banquet on the campus’ front lawn on April 9. The school will honor: >> Joe Matsukawa, a 1949 Waimea alum who excelled in football and baseball and also played both sports at the University of Hawaii. 5 from Hawaii sign to play at Hawaii Hilo

Five Hawaii high school softball players from the class of 2016 signed national letters of intent to play for Hawaii Hilo and coach Peejay Brun. The five are Maryknoll first baseman Mylee Enos, Mililani outfielder Kristen Ishii, Moanalua catcher/infielder Brinell Kaleikini, Kamehameha second baseman Jordan Millwood, and Kauai shortstop Aleigha Scovel.

OIA JV softball umpires needed

The OIA Softball Umpires Association is looking for umpires for the upcoming junior varsity season, which starts Sept. 5. Training and mentoring will be provided and varsity players are welcome to learn the rules and officiate. According to the association, umpires are “desperately needed” for the varsity season as well, which starts in February. Dean Yonamine is moving to the softball head coaching ranks, and Kurt Miyahira is moving on up. Maryknoll’s Labasan is Gatorade player of year

Maryknoll pitcher Shearyna Labasan was picked as the Gatorade Hawaii Softball Player of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary character. Labasan, a 5-foot-5 senior right-hander, went 15-3 with a 1.68 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 129 innings. She led the Spartans (15-3-1) to the state Division I semifinals. Campbell’s championship parade Saturday
