Maryknoll’s Labasan is Gatorade player of year

Maryknoll pitcher Shearyna Labasan was picked as the Gatorade Hawaii Softball Player of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary character. Labasan, a 5-foot-5 senior right-hander, went 15-3 with a 1.68 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 129 innings. She led the Spartans (15-3-1) to the state Division I semifinals. Liberty Patriots to play Saint Louis, Mililani

Liberty High School of Henderson, Nev., will play two Hawaii football powerhouses, Mililani and Saint Louis, on consecutive weeks in the upcoming season. Izaiah Lavatai, a three-sport star, was picked as Radford’s male athlete of the year, athletic director Kelly Sur announced Monday. Lavatai played football and basketball and was on the track and field team for the Rams. Volleyball and football player Karson Cruz and judoka and wrestler Zorich Palimo‘o earned awards as Na Menehune’s outstanding male athletes. Manaia Perese, a 6-foot-3, 277-poud defensive lineman and a 2013 Mililani graduate, has been offered scholarships to play football at Kansas and Tulsa, according 247sports.com and his high school coach Rod York.
