Hall pass: Ian Kahaloa

By Jerry Campany on June 5, 2015

Ian Kahaloa has raised the bar for baseball players in Hawaii. A year after Jordan Yamamoto of Saint Louis and Kodi Medeiros of Waiakea thrilled scouts and fans at the state baseball tournament, Kahaloa has earned something that neither of the professional pitchers has. Kahaloa will be inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor on June 7 at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom. He will be the first baseball player inducted since 2011 when Shea Shimabukuro got in. […]

Beatty to play for U.S. men’s football team

By Nick Abramo on June 5, 2015

Former Kahuku and Colorado linebacker B.J. Beatty has been selected to play on the U.S. men’s national team assembled by USA Football. The team, composed of 45 U.S. football players ages 20 and up, will compete in the 2015 International Federation of American Football World Championship, a seven-nation tournament to be held July 9-18 in Canton, Ohio. The U.S. national team, which is led by former Boise State and Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins, includes athletes from 24 states and […]

Hall pass: BJ Hosaka

By Jerry Campany on June 5, 2015

BJ Hosaka has outgrown his fish bowl. Hosaka was the big fish at tiny Hawaii Baptist as a four year starter in both basketball and volleyball and will be rewarded for it on June 7 at the Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom when he is inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor. He is the fifth athlete from the school to be so honored, joining former teammate Michael Fisher, Sarah Palmer, Lauren Ho and Matt Stevens. Hosaka owned […]

Hall pass: Sabrina Hollins

By Jerry Campany on June 5, 2015

A case for Hall of Honor candidacy is usually made in an athlete’s freshman year, when they start their journey toward multiple state titles. That is not how Waipahu’s Sabrina Hollins played it, though, but it worked out just fine. Hollins didn’t compete in a varsity sport until her junior year, but did enough in two years to be inducted June 7 at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom. Not that there weren’t signs of her future in her junior year. […]

Hall pass: Lena Hayakawa

By Jerry Campany on June 4, 2015

Swimming is an individual sport, but Lena Hayakawa became the first from Mid-Pacific’s strong program to be inducted into the Hall of Honor by keeping team in mind. Hayakawa will be enshrined with 11 others on June 7 at the Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom. It’s not as if Hayakawa is not the state’s fastest female swimmer, because she has been since teammate Summer Harrison and fellow Hall of Honor inductee Jasmine Mau of Punahou graduated last year. Hayakawa has […]

Hall pass: Tiyana Hallums

By Jerry Campany on June 4, 2015

Voters in the Star-Advertiser’s postseason awards say Tiyana Hallums was never the best volleyball player in the state, but she may have been on the best team of all time. Hallums was third on the Star-Advertiser’s Fab 15 volleyball list as a junior and second on the rankings as a senior behind Punahou’s McKenna Granato. She was behind teammate Alohi Robins-Hardy and Kahuku’s Adora Anae in 2013. Hallums will join Robins-Hardy in the Enterprise/HHSAA Hall of Honor on June 7 […]

Amosa, Campbell want a ‘bonding like no other’

By Nick Abramo on June 4, 2015

SIXTH IN A SERIES ON SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICES ON OAHU School pride has been soaring at Campbell for a few years due to the success of its athletic teams. In the recently finished school year, it really took off. The baseball and softball team won the Division I state titles last month within the span of a week; in the winter, the girls soccer team won the OIA championship and made it deep into the state tournament; and last fall, […]

Hall pass: Gabbie Ewing

By Jerry Campany on June 4, 2015

It’s hard to boil Gabbie Ewing‘s contribution to Hawaii Prep athletics by mere numbers. As a soccer player, she controls the middle and isn’t asked to put up obscene goal totals like Leo Klink and Sonest Furtado did. On the volleyball court, she wasn’t the type of player to rise above the net and drop bombs like Tiyana Hallums or McKenna Granato until she had to be. But the 16 member Hall of Honor committee had no problem judging intangibles […]
