By Jerry Campany on December 11, 2017

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. This time it is 1974, when current ILH director Blane Gaison won the Prep Bowl for Kamehameha over Leilehua. Even with the quarterback’s heroics to end his junior year, he was shut out of the Honolulu Advertiser’s All-State team behind […]

Pupule ballot: Sabers rattle roundball cage

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2017

Once again, Maryknoll is a unanimous pick at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 this week. On my ballot, there’s one distinct change: Campbell. The Sabers pass my litmus test. Once we get below the Elite Teams (Maryknoll, Kamehameha); the A-/B+ teams that have championship talent and development labs (post underclassmen — Konawaena, Lahainaluna, ‘Iolani; the unbeaten, somewhat disrespected D-II program that beat two ranked teams soundly (St. Francis); the overachievers (Punahou, Waiakea)… we have Campbell. Of […]

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here with the help of the Hawaii State Library System and newspapers.com. Today we dial the wayback machine to the ancient time of 1948, when the ILH ruled the land and Kamehameha ruled the ILH. Despite the Warriors’ title, they put […]

Tolu and Hugh miss each other by a year

By Nick Abramo on December 10, 2017

Hawaii basketball bigs are rare. Bigs with immense talent are even more scarce. That’s why the state’s fans just missed a large-scale collision. One year off to be exact. Tolu Smith, who stands 6 feet 10, is here and ready to lead the Kahuku Red Raiders this season as they defend their Division I state title. But Hugh Hogland, ‘Iolani’s 6-9 man in the middle for four seasons, is now playing in college — at D-I Portland. “It would have […]
