1956 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on December 13, 2017

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. This time we turn our attention to 1956, when Roosevelt ruled the ILH for the second straight season behind coach Edmund “Ticky” Vasconcellos and was rewarded with five players on the Honolulu Advertiser’s first team after an undefeated campaign. Quarterback […]

Despite injuries, Warriors overcome Raiders

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2017

The timing and weirdness of fluke injuries and real on-court injuries doesn’t seem to faze Joseph Cho, but his Warriors swear by the healing powers of the “Maunawili Man.” The Kamehameha girls basketball coach keeps rolling with the ups and downs, and for the No. 2-ranked Warriors, the season has been almost entirely plus, plus, plus so far. A 44-32 win over No. 5 ‘Iolani on the road on Tuesday night had plenty to do with the surging power of […]

They both made the final, and Terukina dispatched Estrella 11-5. Terukina swept Officials, the OIA and state titles at 132 pounds last year. Lahainaluna won the boys […]

Centennial embraces old school, keeps winning

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2017

In a world where high school coaches are hired and fired in the blink of an eye, or walk away in the midst of crisis, sometimes the process is forgotten. Not so at Centennial High School in Las Vegas, where Karen Weitz is in her 24th season as head coach of the girls basketball program. The Bulldogs swept through the ‘Iolani Classic in their first visit to the islands, toppling Oregon 6A defending champion Southridge 53-43 in the final on […]

The Red Raiders made it to the state final and lost 31-28 to Saint Louis under interim head coach Makoa Freitas this past season. Freitas was appointed the interim coach after Vavae Tata left the post after two years. Tata won the 2015 Division I state championship and made it to the final […]

The former Nanakuli junior varsity coach was hired after longtime coach Hinano Higa stepped down before the 2016-17 season. Two weeks ago, Roosevelt played in the Sacred Hearts Invitational preseason tournament. After the team’s last game, a […]
