By Paul Honda on December 14, 2017

Sherice Ajifu says there was no choice. The Mid-Pacific girls basketball coach, who led the Owls to the Division II state championship last season, resigned on Sunday after several days of crisis within the program. It came down, she said, to “core values.” “I don’t want to put anybody on a hot seat, but I’ll say this: we decided to resign due to a lack of administrative support,” Ajifu said Thursday night. “It has nothing to do with a kid. By Paul Honda on December 13, 2017

Kahuku and Roosevelt had appeal for basketball fans long before there was anything resembling the unusual. Kahuku’s 42-37 overtime win in Roosevelt’s gym was every bit as tantalizing as imaginable for two fairly young teams in the hunt for an Oahu Interscholastic Association championship. It has been three games since coach Chad Kaihe resigned after an incident with a parent in the parking lot at Sacred Hearts Academy following a tournament game. That situation remains in the no-comment zone for […]

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. This selection is the first of recent vintage, with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser making collectible cards for each first-team selection for the first time. Kahuku is all over the selections, with Aofaga Wily, Kawe Johnson and Reggie Torres sweeping the player […]

Miller’s case against OIA pushed back to January

By Jerry Campany on December 13, 2017

Kapolei basketball player Jalen Miller had his temporary restraining order pushed back to January, putting the Hurricanes coaching staff in a dilemma. If Kapolei plays Miller, whose parents sued the OIA and Department of Education to allow him to transfer from Mililani to his home district of Kapolei, and the family loses the suit, the Hurricanes would have to forfeit the games he played in. The OIA boys basketball regular season starts Dec. 23. Miller’s family recently sued schools superintendent […]
