Naha, Maryknoll each finish 2-1 at Classic

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2017

Naha Senior of Okinawa went 2-1 in the ‘Iolani Classic girls tournament, beating host ‘Iolani and Miramonte (Calif.) after losing to eventual champion Centennial on opening day. It may be the best win-loss mark by a team from Asia in the tournament’s history. > Jin Lin (Nanjing, China) 1-2 (2012) > Shenzen (China) 1-2 (2014) > Tsinghua (Beijing, China) 2-4 (two entries), 2011 (most recent) The Bears weren’t just fast and tough. They embraced the 30-second shot clock, seemingly happy […]

Maryknoll reaches back for flexibility

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2017

The blueprint for the team in white, maroon and gold is simple enough. The generic 2-3 zone is not quite what Maryknoll does, but in the hands of coach Chico Furtado, it is flypaper-sticky. It is Boeheimian. It is what the Lady Spartans used to bring the whirling, beautiful motion offense of Oregon City to a proverbial thud. The Pioneers, runners-up in Oregon 6A girls basketball last season, shot 2-for-14 (14 percent) in a pivotal third quarter. That set the […]

Walker, Brink lead ‘Iolani Classic all-tourney team

By Paul Honda on December 9, 2017

One won a championship and the other fell just short, and both are underclassmen. Centennial’s versatile, tough junior, Eboni Walker, was named the most valuable player of the ‘Iolani Classic after her team got past pesky Southridge 53-43 for the title. Walker did a lot of tough work on the glass, rebounding against the likes of Cameron Brink, a battle between a 5-foot-11 player and a 6-4 center. In many ways, Walker’s strength in the paint, coast-to-coast playmaking and all-around […]

Crusaders race from banquet to victory

By Paul Honda on December 9, 2017

It was messy and it was gritty. Saint Louis will take the win every time, and it never has to be pretty. Noa Purcell, arriving straight from the football team’s banquet, powered his way to the hoop and scored 23 points as the Crusaders edged Roosevelt 56-53 on the final day of the OIA-ILH Challenge at Moanalua High School gym. Trailing 54-53, Roosevelt had a chance to take the lead with 12 seconds left, but Jared Elwin — who had […]

He later tweeted out his commitment on Twitter. Tupuola-Fetui, who is 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, told Blair Angulo of 247sports that he made his decision because, “the culture that coach Pete (Chris Petersen) has brought to the program and the sense of home and family that I’ve gotten there.” You can read the full story […]

2005 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on December 9, 2017

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. 2005 was another year with Kahuku left standing, and the Red Raiders were rewarded with seven players on the Honolulu Advertiser’s first team. B.J. Beatty led the way as the defensive player of the year but Kealoha Pilares of Damien […]

‘Lesson learned’ for Maryknoll after loss to Southridge

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2017

The defending Oregon 6A state champions are picking up where they left off. The Southridge Skyhawks were 27-2 last year, beating Oregon City in the state final for the crown. They hadn’t played a game since until this week. So far, so good. Southridge is 2-0 after a 63-39 runaway win over Hawaii’s No. 1 team, Maryknoll, in the semifinals of the ‘Iolani Classic on Friday night. For Maryknoll, a team that is long and tall by Hawaii standards, it […]
