Maybe it’s the Mike Cavanaugh effect.
Nebraska became the 15th FBS school to make a football scholarship offer to Mililani junior Vavae Malepeai recently. The Cornhuskers have Cavanaugh, the former UH offensive line coach on staff, and Nebraska was represented recently by Cavanaugh and other staffers during a tour of the islands.
The ‘Huskers also have offers to Kaiser offensive lineman Michael Eletise and Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Malepeai, a 6-foot, 200-pound running back, was a Star-Advertiser first-team all-state selection last fall. He now has 15 offers in all.
Doug Kimmel of Scout.com posted the news on Twitter. Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance also shared the news on its Facebook page.
As a junior, Malepeai rushed for 1,244 yards and 23 touchdowns on 220 carries.
His updated offer list: Colorado, Washington, Cal, Hawaii, Utah State, Washington State, Nevada, Vanderbilt, Michigan, Stanford, Tulsa, UCLA, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Nebraska.
