‘City slicker’ tops Farmer in 3 OTs at 285

By Nick Abramo on December 19, 2015

Now that’s what you call a gripping wrestling match. And in more ways than one. While perusing the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament brackets on the stage overlooking the Leilehua gym Saturday, it was hard to miss two high school behemoths going at it on the nearest mat. One was wearing the teal singlet of the Kapolei Hurricanes. The other wore the forest green uniform of the Molokai Farmers. The two boys looked somewhat alike. They were pushing and […]

Ikei’s upset at Officials was no surprise to coach

By Nick Abramo on December 19, 2015

Hawaii wrestling fans might want to remember the name Tiare Lynn Ikei. Ikei, the daughter of well-known strength and conditioning coach Chad Ikei and the sister of two-time state champion Chance Ikei, is a Kaiser freshman and she knocked off top-seeded Brianna Leong of Leilehua in the 102-pound quarterfinals during the first day of the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament at the Leilehua gym Friday. “We expected her to be in the finals this week,” Cougars coach Mike Kim […]

Kamehameha’s Blaysen Terukina and Leilehua’s Liam Corbett are two wins away from their third straight Officials titles. Terukina made it through the first day of the 132-pound bracket with a pin of Kailua’s Koalii Santos in 1:10 before pinning Roosevelt’s Zachary Foster in 4:25. Things get harder in the tournament’s toughest bracket, though, with Pac-Five’s Joseph Fong waiting in the semifinals and either Antonio Ruiz of Moanalua or top seed Shandon Ilaban-Totten looming in the title match. Corbett, Hawaiiprepworld’s top […]

The 112-pound class on the girls side at the Officials wrestling tournament has turned into quite the Final Four. The second day will begin with top seed Alexis Encinas of Lahainaluna vs. Campbell’s Kalissa Pundyke in one semifinal and Punahou’s Taryn Ichimura opposing Kayla Lono of Leilehua in the other. All four of them are state placers and Encinas and Pundyke have won state titles in their careers. Encinas started her day with a pin of Pac-Five’s Sydnee Ramirez in […]

Alo qualifies for OIympic Trials

By Jerry Campany on December 18, 2015

Kamehameha senior Teshya Alo has qualified for the United States Olympic Trials in Iowa April 9-10. That places her a step away from representing the United States in Rio. But first Alo is going for the victory. Alo won her first two matches at the U.S. Senior Nationals today, pinning Axa Molina in 1:35 to reach the second round and then stopping 2014 Hawaii state champion for Lahainaluna Breana Dudoit-Vasquez in 1:35. Dudoit-Vasquez, who currently wrestles at Wayland Baptist, will […]

Officials wrestling tournament brackets

By Jerry Campany on December 17, 2015

With state and league titles the stated goal for high school wrestlers, the Hawaii Officials tournament is often overlooked. But in many ways, it is as hard to win as any of the tournaments later in the year. Leilehua’s Liam Corbett and Kamehameha’s Blaysen Terukina will be going for their third title at the tournament beginning Friday, looking to join a list of the greatest names in recent Hawaii high school wrestling. If Corbett and Terukina can make their way […]

Kamehameha’s Alo firm atop girls wrestling P4P

By Jerry Campany on December 17, 2015

Judging by the season’s first girls pound-for-pound rankings, this weekend’s Officials tournament will be sorely lacking in star power. The top three on the list will all sit the tournament out, with No. 1 Teshya Alo of Kamehameha the most obvious omission. Alo has a bigger tournament in mind, though, beginning the U.S. Open for a chance to reach the Olympic Trials. Laleilei Mataafa will not appear, nor will Iolani sophomore Teniya Alo. She is recovering from an injury and […]
