Corbett tops boys wrestling P4P rankings

Liam Corbett is starting the season on the top, staying there will be the tough part. Corbett, who took over the top spot in Hawaii Prep World’s boys pound-for-pound rankings after earning his second OIA title last year, is still in the top spot in this year’s initial tally. Alo faces big wrestling test in Las Vegas

Three-time state champion wrestler Teshya Alo left Monday for Las Vegas for one of her biggest tests yet. Alo will compete on Friday in the U.S. Senior Nationals and Trials Qualifier. If she places in the top six in the 58-kilogram (127.868 pounds) division there, she will compete in the Olympic Trials in April. While Conor McGregor was making quick work of his opponent in a UFC title fight in Las Vegas, a pair of Moanalua wrestlers did the same at the Garner Ivey Invitational on Maui on Saturday. Caleb Garcia of Moanlaua had the fastest pin with an 18 second job on the boys side, and Na Menehune girl Khaitlin Bernaldez did even better by matching McGregor’s 13 seconds in a girls match. Wrestling season unofficially began on Friday with a night match at Campbell, but things don’t ramp up until the Maui Invitational Dec. 11 and 12 on five mats at the Lahaina Civic Center. After that, Officials is scheduled Dec. 18-19 at Leilehua with a USA Wrestling event the day after. Mililani hires basketball, wrestling coaches

Jason Tittle is the new boys basketball coach at Mililani, Trojans athletic director Glenn Nitta said Monday. Tittle, who is a teacher at Mililani Middle School, was Mililani’s junior varsity coach since 2008. He won three Oahu Interscholastic Association JV championships and four OIA Western Division JV titles. He went 69-16 overall, including playoffs. Corbett, Ikei contend in Fargo

Leilehua’s Liam Corbett and Chance Ikei of Kaiser carried Team Hawaii at this week’s national wrestling championships in Fargo, N.D. Corbett pinned the first opponent put against him in the freestyle competition but fell in the second round before winning another match in the consolation bracket. Ikei competed in Greco Roman and won his first match 16-12 but lost his second 14-6. He blitzed his opponent 11-0 in the first match of the consolation bracket before losing 10-0. Other Hawaii […]

Warriors’ Alo is national wrestler of the year

Just when it seems there is not anything left that Teshya Alo hasn’t accomplished, she adds another big honor. Alo, a three-time state champion for Kamehameha, was named the Asics High School Wrestler of the Year. The award has been given out every year since 2001, and Alo is the first athlete from Hawaii to receive the honor.
