Moanalua’s Higa joins fray at 97 pounds

The heaviest competition in girls wrestling this year seems to be at the lightest weight class. Oahu’s girls assembled at Nanakuli for a round robin tournament on Saturday, and the action got off to a quick start with Roosevelt’s Menjam Tamang sticking Raven Rafael and Amanda Higa of Moanalua stopping Damien’s Paige Franczyk. Kato gets a light workout in Waipahu

Punahou’s Cameron Kato had no trouble at an OIA/ILH mini tournament at Waipahu on Saturday. Kato, a defending state champion and ranked No. 3 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound list, pinned both of his opponents before forfeiting his final match. He drew a bye in his first match before stopping Ti-Jey Asano of Farrington and Kapolei’s Treyson Caniete. Experience counts. Only four senior boys are going for their fourth medal at this year’s state tournament, and all four of them are ranked in the pound-for-pound top 10. Iolani boys, Kamehameha girls win Duals

Led by captains Jake Nakasone and James Mizota, the Iolani boys wrestling team beat Hillcrest of California to win the Moanalua Duals on Tuesday night. Fellow captain Brian Pascua was not needed, winning his finals match by forfeit in the 42-27 win. Peralta rises in girls wrestling rankings

Angela Peralta is still on the move. The two-time OIA champion vaulted from No. 10 to No. 5 in the latest Honolulu Prep World girls wrestling pound-for-pound rankings after beating all comers at the Officials tournament and then doing it again at Paani three days later. The two-day Paani Challenge, recognized as the only all-girls wrestling tournament in the nation, wrapped up Tuesday at Punahou school. Fifty schools and 119 participants competed with Waianae, Roosevelt and Lahainaluna leading the way with three individual champions each in the open division. You can count Iolani as the favorite in boys wrestling this year if Officials is any judge. The Raiders had four champions and scored 193.5 points to beat Campbell (2 and 178) and Baldwin (1 and 148). Waianae, Leilehua, Kamehameha, Saint Louis, Lahainaluna each had one champion.
