Boys wrestling: Pound for pound rankings

By Jerry Campany on December 9, 2014

There are a lot of state championships out there for the taking this year. With Josh Terao, Brayden Akeo and Blake Cooper off to bigger and better things, the Star-Advertiser’s preseason top 10 pound-for-pound list is lacking talent that has climbed to the highest peak of Hawaii high school wrestling. Zack Diamond and Liam Corbett take the top two spots based on their exceptional performances while representing Hawaii on the continent and the highest state champ is fourth behind two-time […]

Manu heading to Oregon

By Jerry Campany on December 8, 2014

Mililani defensive tackle Rex Manu is the latest big prospect from Hawaii to commit to Oregon. Manu joins Punahou’s Canton Kaumatule and Kamehameha’s Dylan Kane as Hawaii seniors who have committed to the school. Manu had previously committed to Stanford and visited Oregon during its win over Michigan State. http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2014/12/rex_manu_3-star_defensive_line.html Manu was the anchor of the Trojans defense for the past two seasons. He was a Star-Advertiser All-State first team selection as a junior and it’s highly likely that he’ll […]

He’s following a dream to play for the University of Hawaii. Mililani wide receiver Kalakaua Timoteo accepted a scholarship to play football for UH. Stephen Tsai’s report in this morning’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser confirmed the news that broke on Sunday via KHON. He joined teammate McKenzie Milton as another commit from Mililani within the past few days. Timoteo caught 55 passes for 988 yards and 11 touchdowns, including seven receptions for 117 yards and a state-tournament final record of four TDs. […]

Kahuku’s Alos share title at Aiea

By Jerry Campany on December 7, 2014

The Alo girls of Kahuku cleaned out their group at the Aiea Invitational on Saturday. Sisters Jocelyn Alo and Sabrina Alo were placed in the same pool (184.9-206 pounds) at the preseason event, and started their first matches at the same time on side-by-side mats. Jocelyn drew Aiea’s Sarah Miner while Sabrina faced Waianae’s Mildred Keopuhiwa, who was fifth at states last year. Jocelyn, the reigning OIA champion and state placer (third) stuck Miner and Sabrina pinned Keopuhiwa within 15 […]

Strom-Okimoto’s season over for Aiea

By Jerry Campany on December 7, 2014

The state’s leading scorer from last year has played her last high school soccer game. Aiea senior Raisa Strom-Okimoto, who led Na Alii through a magical run to a runner-up finish in last year’s state tournament, tore the ACL in her right knee on Maui in Aiea’s first tournament of the preseason last month. Strom-Okimoto led the state with 24 goals last year, scoring five goals in a game twice in the regular season. And she did all that after […]

Saturday morning: What have we learned?

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2014

For basketball fans, the week of tournaments on the boys side was (and is) pretty awesome. I say awesome in the sense that there were tourneys in town, on the Windward side, and somewhat near Central Oahu (Radford). I can’t even remember the last time I saw a preseason tourney on the Leeward side or in Central Oahu. But I also say pretty awesome because, well, we haven’t gotten the matchup I wanted to see: Kalaheo vs. Maryknoll. That does, […]

Milton reportedly commits to UH

By Paul Honda on December 5, 2014

KHON’s Sam Spangler has reported via Twitter that Mililani quarterback McKenzie Milton has orally committed to the University of Hawaii. Milton was offered a scholarship by UH more than a week ago. When Hawaii Prep World reported on Thursday that he had been offered, Milton expressed a willingness to be patient. He is just a junior. He also expressed the knowledge that colleges aren’t often patient with QB prospects. The 6-foot, 160-pound slinger accounted for 4,141 yards and 47 touchdowns […]
