Hawaii offers Mililani QB Milton scholarship

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2014

McKenzie Milton, Mililani’s record-shattering junior quarterback, has been offered a scholarship by the University of Hawaii. Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance confirmed the news today. “I was pretty stoked when coach (Rod) York called me,” Milton said this afternoon. UH actually made the offer more than a week ago, on Nov. 29 — one day before Thanksgiving. This week, Milton got to chat with two UH assistant coaches during their visit to Mililani High School. He knows quite a bit about […]

Powerful Govs keeping perspective

By Paul Honda on December 3, 2014

One season removed from a stunning run to the state championship game, expectations at Farrington High School are bit tempered. One thing that hasn’t changed is the result. The Governors were overwhelming on Wednesday, rolling to a 77-27 win over Honokaa on the first day of the 16th annual James Alegre Invitational boys basketball tournament. L.J. Gonzales scored 16 points off the bench as coach Allan Silva put all 16 players to work against a young Honokaa squad. Farrington opened […]

GBB: Roosevelt 47, Kamehameha 42, Final

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2014

Healthy-sized crowd here at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium for a noon showdown between ILH power Kamehameha and OIA power Roosevelt. Coach Hinano Higa and her team seem pretty loose and focused for this road game. The Rough Riders won three games at the Ted Fukushima Invitational (Kaiser) two weeks ago. I haven’t seen them since, but yes, they are an OIA and state contender. Kamehameha? This is the post-Aloha Robins-Hardy, post-Tiare Kanoa era. That was a heck of a great team. Two […]

‘Iolani’s ‘hungry’ players made Look’s job easier

By Nick Abramo on November 28, 2014

Wendell Look has been around the championship block a few times. He’s had great and memorable teams at ‘Iolani, but this most recent version of the Raiders was one of the most satisfying for the veteran coach. After beating Lahainaluna 31-14 in the state Division II final last week, Look was asked if it was his toughest coaching job. The question came in light of the fact that ‘Iolani did not make the state final in 2013, thus ending a […]

Offer to a king: UH wants Kalakaua Timoteo

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2014

Mililani’s record-breaking wide receiver, Kalakaua Timoteo, has received his first scholarship offer. Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance announced today that the 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior received an offer from the University of Hawaii. Timoteo caught a record four touchdown passes in Mililani’s 53-45 state-championship win over Punahou on Friday. He finished the game with seven catches for 117 yards. Though Timoteo missed two games with injury, he played in 10 and finished the season with 55 receptions for 988 yards and 11 […]

Principal: Luna transfers to Konawaena legit

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2014

The dilemma for Konawaena’s girls basketball team — a good problem or source of stress, depending on perspective — has simmered. For coach Bobbie Awa, the arrival of three prominent Lahainaluna players recently could be a blessing or a curse, depending on how things unfold over the course of the next few weeks. Konawaena is in its third week of preseason, and there are risks involved with the transfers — sisters Lindsay Bates and Taylor Bates, and guard Aloha Salem. […]
