Soccer: Punahou girls, MPI boys stand up

By Jerry Campany on December 13, 2014

Kaile Halvorsen and True Dydasco both scored and Punahou won the first meaningful game of the ILH girls soccer season with a 2-0 shutout of defending state champion Kamehameha. The Buffanblu have not allowed a goal in three games this year and has outscored opponents 13-0. The Warriors drop into a second-place tie with ‘Iolani but Kamehameha has played one more game than the Raiders. In other games: >> Pac-Five got two goals each from Kayla Kunihisa, Chelsie DePonte and […]

Saint Louis, Pahoa play for title

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2014

Not far from a live lava flow… Pahoa’s boys team continued its perfect (6-0) preseason and is drumming up a lot of well-deserved attention as the state’s Cinderella story. The small school in Puna added another proverbial feather to its hat by defeating Waiakea 42-36 on Friday in the semifinal round of the St. Joseph Cardinal Clifford Dias Classic in Hilo. Keinan Agonias scored 14 points and Tolby Saito added 12 for the Daggers. They will face Saint Louis, which […]

Recap: Thursday hoop highlights

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2014

It’s Friday morning, which means the busy week is winding down for most humans. For hoopaholics, however, things are just getting a little more interesting. What have we learned after one day of the ‘Iolani Classic and OIA-ILH Challenge? >> Konawaena is unflappable. The Wildcats are one of the smallest teams in the Classic, yet nothing fazes them. They dissected Miramonte’s three-quarter press and halfcourt traps with regularity. I didn’t expect a 44-point first half by the Wildcats, and they […]

Pupule’s ‘what if’ Top 10 ballot 12/10

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2014

(Updates with Kamehameha-Hawaii scores courtesy of Josh Pacheco.) Since the last post about my first faux girls basketball top 10 ballot of the season, most teams haven’t been extremely busy. Konawaena? They’ve been humming along. There was an alumni game that the old-timers won 50-49, then four wins in a row at the Konawaena Tournament. That included wins over Lahainaluna and Kailua, two teams that I expect to see at the state tourney. Here’s what my updated Top 10 ballot […]

Wily-Matagi committed to Utah, but…

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2014

Kahuku quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi is preparing himself for life after high school, but it sounds like he may be considering a different destination. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior is an early commit to Utah. In the fall, Wily-Matagi said Utah was looking at him as a tight end. Lately, however, he reportedly is being groomed to play defensive end by the Utes. Scout.com reported on Monday that Wily-Matagi enjoyed a recent trip to Colorado, and that Washington State and Wisconsin are […]

Girls wrestling: Pound for pound rankings

By Jerry Campany on December 9, 2014

LLook out for Lahainaluna. The Lunas feature three of the top four wrestlers in the preseason pound-for-pound list including three returning state champions. Lelelei Mataafa and Carly Jaramillo will be going for their third state crown this year with Breanna Dudoit-Vasquez looking to repeat. They are all looking up at Kamehameha’s Teshya Alo, though, who sits in the No. 1 spot after two years of being undefeated and carrying a world championship around with her. Alo has one other thing […]
