Solomon feels the pain of Pearl City’s loss

By Nick Abramo on May 1, 2015

Two Pearl City players dove desperately for a dig. They didn’t get the ball and they collided hard into each other on the way to the floor. The Chargers’ P-Jay Solomon stayed down longer and appeared to be more hurt than teammate Jordan Florita. At first, it looked as though Solomon would shake it off and return to action in the OIA Division II boys volleyball championship game against Castle. But he kept looking at his arm while being attended […]

Kaiser’s Lum breaks OIA pole vault record

By Stan Lee on April 30, 2015

Kaiser’s Celine Lum broke the OIA record in the girls pole vault at Thursday’s trials of the OIA track and field championships. Lum won the event by clearing 12 feet, 1 inch to easily break the mark of 11-2 set by Rachel Craft in 2013. The meet at Mililani narrowed the field for Saturday’s finals with the exception of girls pole vault and boys high jump. Campbell’s Maunakea Medeiros cleared 5-10 to edge teammate Zibrex Cabel to win the high […]

By Jerry Campany on April 30, 2015

OIA champion Campbell received the top seed in the Division I Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State championships beginning May 6. The Sabers, who narrowly beat Mililani for the OIA title, play the winner between Maui and Moanalua in the second round at Les Murakami Stadium. ILH champion Mid-Pacific earned the second seed and will meet either Waiakea or Kailua. Baldwin is the third seed as the MIL champion and gets the winner between OIA powers Mililani and Pearl City. BIIF […]

Softball doesn’t fence in Punahou’s Nishizawa

By Nick Abramo on April 30, 2015

The sun was starting to go down behind the buildings to the southwest of the Punahou softball diamond, giving the atmosphere a golden hue. Buffanblu senior starting pitcher Nicole Nishizawa was walking in from the outfield after working with her teammates to dismantle the makeshift home run fence. She had just played her last high school game and she went over to the dugout, where coach Bobby Makahilahila was packing up some final things before departing. They shared a few […]

Akimseu sisters hug after ILH softball war

By Nick Abramo on April 30, 2015

One sister was pitching. The other sister was hitting against her. One was, disappointingly, eliminated along with her. The other will play at least one more game. During an ILH softball tournament elimination game Wednesday, Mid-Pacific senior Kaili-Ann Akimseu and Punahou freshman Bailey Akimseu matched up against each other. It was the third time this season that Kaili-Ann pitched against her sister Bailey. “We have a running joke going because all three games they’ve faced each other, Bailey gets beaned,” […]

OIA Red softball bracket

By Jerry Campany on April 30, 2015

OIA East champion Kaiser is a win away from rare territory for the school. The Cougars are the East’s top seed in next week’s OIA softball championship, giving it a valuable first-round bye. The Cougars play either Kapolei or Roosevelt at home on May 6, and a win would put it in the Division I state tournament for the first time since 1997. Kaiser was in the division II tournament in 2013. Should the Cougars get upset, they would play […]

Kapolei boys build judo powerhouse

By Jerry Campany on April 27, 2015

The Kapolei boys judo team grew up all at once. The Hurricanes had five individual champions and one runner up at Saturday’s OIA Individual Championships, equaling the number of league titleists from the school’s history. Jayson Pagurayan and Kekua Marumoto each won their second OIA crowns and Andre Pagurayan, Anthony Brett and Rodman Salagdron added their firsts. Before Pagurayan and Marumoto came along, Kapolei’s only previous OIA champs in the state championship era were Kainoa Marumoto in 2012, Tyler Kono […]
