Mind over matter: Kapihe’s masterful night

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2015

Kaiser’s 9-0 loss to Campbell in the OIA baseball semifinal round on Friday night was a demonstration of a solid, good team going up against a premier pitcher in stealth mode. Kila Kapihe was that good. The nine strikeouts with just one walk in his two-hit shutout wasn’t just good. It was mastery. And he’s been doing it all season long on a staff that includes the heart’s desire of many an MLB scout, Ian Kahaloa, and the versatile lefty, […]

Hockey popular among Hawaii’s prep athletes

By Nick Abramo on April 25, 2015

Everett Lau pitched for ‘Iolani against Punahou on Friday. He wasn’t involved in the decision. E.J. Abramo ran in the OIA JV track and field championships last Saturday. What the two athletes have in common is an appearance in the North American Roller Hockey Championships in January. They were teammates for the Kapolei Inline Hockey Arenas team that won the gold medal in the 16-under division in San Jose. But they are far from the only two hockey players participating […]

Sports to Ponder: Where is ‘Iolani’s true place?

By Nick Abramo on April 24, 2015

Many people think ‘Iolani playing Division I football for the first time since 2002 is the way it’s supposed to be. Obvious. A slam dunk. Instead of continuing to win championships in Division II, many people shout that the Raiders should move up to play the iron of the ILH and the best in the state. And that’s exactly what ‘Iolani is going to be doing next fall because of a new ILH rule. One can certainly argue that D-I […]

Hirano’s eagle draws some hoots and hollers

By Nick Abramo on April 23, 2015

Spencer Dunaway of Kamehameha wasn’t the only one making noise during the ILH championship golf tournament on Thursday at Turtle Bay’s Fazio Course. Dunaway birdied the 18th hole to win the title by one stroke. A little earlier, Punahou’s Remington Hirano chipped in for eagle on the 277-yard par-4 14th. He was just short, right and below the green after a booming drive. Playing partner Andrew Otani of ‘Iolani, the first round leader on Monday who fell off the pace […]

‘Iolani declares intention to play D-I football

By Nick Abramo on April 23, 2015

‘It’s official. ‘Iolani will be playing football in ILH Division I next season, Raiders coach Wendell Look confirmed Thursday. Having won multiple ILH and state championships in D-II, the Raiders were required by a new rule to move up to D-II, barring appeal. School officials had been meeting the last few months in an attempt to make a decision on whether ‘Iolani would appeal to stay in D-II or not. Eventually, the Raiders’ returning players made the decision. “We met […]

Reid’s second offer: Nevada

By Paul Honda on April 23, 2015

Radford junior wide receiver Thomas Reid III is on the radar of college football coaches. Ten days ago, Reid received his first scholarship offer, from Hawaii. Today, Nevada, via assistant coach and former UH quarterback Nick Rolovich, became the second university to make an offer to Reid. “I’m just glad Rolo saw it, too,” Radford coach Fred Salanoa texted this afternoon. Reid caught 33 passes for 619 yards and seven touchdowns last fall. Salanoa has already compared the 6-foot-2, 190-pound […]
