Running the table: OIA baseball playoffs

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2015

There is a minimum of mercy in the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs, which begin on Wednesday. Unlike the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, which has an automatic state-tournament berth for the regular-season winner (Mid-Pacific) and a double-elimination format in the playoffs, the OIA leaves no room for defeat. The single-elimination format rewards late-season play — the hottest teams. Wednesday’s opening round is, as usual, a play-in situation. Winners advance to the quarterfinals. Losers are done for the season. From there, it’s […]

OIA boys volleyball brackets

By Jerry Campany on April 17, 2015

Moanalua will be going for its fourth-straight OIA championship as the top seed in next week’s league tournament. Na Menehune went through the regular season undefeated and can make coach Alan Cabanting the first coach since Roosevelt’s Robin Goo from 1977-1980 to win four straight OIA titles. Doug Hee won the title for Moanalua in 2011 before Cabanting took over. Goo is the only coach to win four in a row. No team has ever won five OIA titles in […]

LIVE BLOG: Campbell 4, Mililani 3, F

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2015

Game time is 45 minutes away in this showdown for the OIA West crown. As far as playoff implications go, the winner gets the top seed in the West and the loser gets the second. Either way, Campbell and Mililani will have first-round byes. Unlike the ILH, where regular-season placing can figure into the equation for a state-tournament berth, the OIA playoffs are a one-and-done deal in terms of the league championship. Quarterfinal losers can still qualify for the state […]

Star Wars: Recruiters swarming in

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2015

It was William Shakespeare’s Hamlet who once uttered the words, “Perchance to dream.” The Washington State Cougars are certainly doing that. With this morning’s scholarship offer to ‘Iolani junior wide receiver/kicker Keoni-Kordell Makekau, that makes a total of seven offers to Hawaii football players. The Cougars are dreaming of a 2015-19 era with QB Tua Taagovailoa (Saint Louis) in the pocket, protected by offensive linemen Michael Eletise (Kaiser) and Toleafoa Sean Auwae (Kapolei), handing the ball to RB Vavae Malepeai […]
