Judoka going for combat sports double

By Jerry Campany on May 8, 2015

Only three athletes swept wrestling and judo state titles last year, the fewest since 2005 when judo was in its infancy as a state sport. The combat sports double hit its zenith in 2008 and 2010, when nine different athletes stood on the top of the podium in winter and spring, led by Punahou’s Chrissy Chow. Six judoka, four boys and three girls, will go for the elusive double of a state judo title to go with a state wrestling […]

By Nick Abramo on May 7, 2015

An 11-1 loss to West power Mililani in the OIA semifinals might be just what East champion Kaiser needed. “Eminem said it: ‘Snap back to reality, oh there goes gravity,’ ” Kaiser coach Mitch Matsumoto said. “Our goal was to get the bye as the East’s top seed and to make it to states. We did it. Now we can say that we are one of the best 12 teams in the state. “The teams in the West are hands […]

ILH vs. OIA in state water polo semis

By Jerry Campany on May 7, 2015

If history is any indication, one of the state water polo semifinals will be a blowout and the other will come down to the wire. Punahou and Kapolei tangle at 5:15 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center for one spot in the final and Kamehameha and Kahuku play for the other spot after them. The Buffanblu and Hurricanes have met four times in the state tournament, and it has not been pretty for the public school. Punahou beat Kapolei […]
