HHSAA girls golf medalists

By Jerry Campany on May 7, 2015

Punahou junior Mariel Galdiano is still on track to become the first prep golfer to earn the high school grand slam after winning the state tournament at Waikoloa Kings this week. But as she well knows, there are plenty of firsts that she was born too late to touch. The girls tournament began in earnest in 1999, more than 30 years after the boys took the course for the first time. It took a while, but they would not be […]

‘Iolani to replace coaches Shimokawa, Okamura

By Nick Abramo on May 7, 2015

‘Iolani is losing two spring sports coaches, according to athletic director Carl Schroers. Baseball coach Brent Shimokawa and softball coach Corey Okamura will not return for next season. “I am proud of both of them,” Schroers said. “They gave their heart and soul to a bunch of our students. They were both well liked and kept a high standard. It (the reason for leaving) was time issues for both of them.” This spring, ‘Iolani went 4-11 under Okamura and 5-11 […]

Grizzlies introduce Moanalua’s Gaogao

By Nick Abramo on May 7, 2015

A story on the University of Montana’s sports website introduced Moanalua outside hitter Lia Gaogao to the Grizzlies. She signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at the PIAA signing ceremony in Waikiki last month. Gaogao is a two-time Honolulu Star-Advertiser Fab 15 choice, and she was named to the HHSAA state all-tournament team two years in a row. The 5-foot-11 Gaogao is projected to compete at left-side hitter. She is the sister of Remo Gaogao, who was a […]

Waiakea perseveres to reach quarterfinals

By Paul Honda on May 7, 2015

It wasn’t the smoothest of wins, but coach Rory Inouye was glad for his team, period. Waiakea’s bumpy road has been mostly on the upside, and Wednesday’s battle with Kailua, a 4-3 win in the opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships, was another test of the Warriors’ mettle. Two errors. Seven walks issued. And a clutch hit by Ryder Oshiro in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run. Before that big hit […]
