The singles finals at the Carlsmith Ball / HHSAA State Tennis Championships will look a whole lot like this year’s ILH championships.
Both matches are repeats, with Punahou’s Kawika Lam opposing Jeffrey Liang of Hawaii Baptist and St. Francis’ Taylor Lau taking on Skyla Alcon of Mid-Pacific.
Lam, who will be trying to capture his third straight singles title, beat OIA champion Andre Ilagan of Farrington 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Junichi Minakata of Hawaii Prep 6-1, 6-1 in the semis.
Liang took out Andrew Yip of Kamehameha 7-5, 6-2 and McKenna Fujitani 6-3, 7-6 (7).
Lam beat Liang 6-0, 7-6(5) for the ILH championship.
Lau, a sophomore, beat Kealakehe’s Michelle Uyeda 6-2, 6-1 and Emily Soares of Hilo 6-0, 6-1. Alcon beat Tristen Bryant-Otake of Mid-Pacific 6-2, 6-2 and Tayvia Yamagata of Konawaena 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Lau beat Alcon 7-6, 6-1 in the ILH final.
Top seeds Jordan Azuma and Phuc Hyunh of Iolani will play Punahou’s Austin Hamamoto and Travis Lau in the boys doubles final. The girls doubles final pits top seeded Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato of Kamehameha-Maui against Katreina Corpuz and Alyssia Fossorier of Punahou.
Punahou leads the boys team standings by 10 points and the girls’ race by five. All four finals will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
All four finals pit the top two seeds.
