Uekawa gives bench players valuable experience

By Nick Abramo on May 13, 2015

Coach John Uekawa put his subs in liberally during Maryknoll’s 13-0, mercy-rule victory over Waiakea in the state softball quarterfinals Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. “After the game, I asked the substitutes, ‘How did it feel to play in a state tournament game?’ And I told them how special it is, since some players and coaches on teams never make it to states.” Uekawa also put them in the game so they would gain valuable experience. “They told me […]

Okubo: Mind over matter

By Paul Honda on May 13, 2015

Top seed Jaclyn Fontanilla of Kamehameha was chasing her third title, but was outlasted by Kari Okubo of Aiea in the 154 girls final. Okubo overcame mental and physical hurdles — an injured right ankle — prior to the tourney.  “I really had to fix my attitude this weekend. I was really down about facing a two-time state champion,” said Okubo, who was a defending champion in her own right. “I had to get a motivational talk from my parents. […]

By Paul Honda on May 13, 2015

Though premier wrestler and judoka Teshya Alo of Kamehameha was away in a wrestling competition on the mainland, her younger sister, Teniya Alo, stepped up and won her first state title. The ‘Iolani freshman won the 122 weight class on Saturday at Stan Sheriff Center. She hadn’t played judo for two years before this spring, but is hoping to become a four-peat champion in both sports.  “I would actually stay and do something my sister hasn’t done,” she said. “And […]

The Nevada connection was former UH quarterback and assistant coach Nick Rolovich. Now Radford coach Fred Salanoa has another connection that has yielded an offer for another Radford player. Blaise Manabe, a transfer from Kalani, has a full-ride offer from Adams State. While Reid has the benefit of some game video highlights and a solid […]

Campbell’s electricity was flowing in title run

By Nick Abramo on May 13, 2015

There was a real baseball game played at Les Murakami Stadium on Saturday. Not that other games played aren’t real, mind you, but this one had intense drama, the kind of drama that you would have to be an unfeeling robot not to get wrapped up in. Little kids on the right were screaming for Mid-Pacific. Little kids on the left were screaming for Campbell. Adults were on the edge of their seats. Can I get some popcorn, please? You […]

Top colleges recruit Eichelberger for water polo

By Nick Abramo on May 10, 2015

Goalkeeper Emalia Eichelberger stopped 10 shots in Punahou’s 4-2 water polo state tournament victory over Kamehameha on Saturday. The junior is not your standard issue, run-of-the-mill goalkeeper, as can be ascertained by the mere two goals she let in during the biggest match of the season. The daughter of former PGA Tour and current Champions Tour golfer Dave Eichelberger, Emalia (pronounced Emma-LEE-ah) is being recruited heavily by some top college teams. “Many teams are interested, but I’m pretty sure she […]
