Punahou future looking good despite loss

By Curtis Murayama on January 7, 2016

When is a loss a good loss? Possible when it happens in the league opener, with a young team that will only learn from the experience, improve and get better. That was the assessment of Punahou boys coach Darren Matsuda, after his No. 1-ranked Buffanblu rallied but fell to No. 9 Mid-Pacific 56-54 Wednesday night at Mills Gym on the Mid-Pacific campus. “Losing right now is not necessarily a bad thing,” Matsuda said. “I think it’s a good thing actually. Alan Akina tells his side of the story concerning his suspension as coach of the Kahuku basketball team on a Facebook post from Jan. 1. On Dec. 29, Hawaii Prep World learned of Akina’s suspension, which occurred apparently for alleged favoritism toward his two sons, Keanu Akina and Kawika Akina. Hawaii Prep World realizes the Department of Education and the Kahuku administration may have had valid reasons for the suspension, so we would welcome and publish any statement from either […]

Hunger Games: Kailua survives at Roosevelt

By Paul Honda on January 2, 2016

Steve Hathaway played his cards right. The longtime Roosevelt boys basketball coach had a younger, smaller team, one that hadn’t faced a gauntlet of Top 10 competition. The bigger, more experienced squad, Kailua, had endured through a tough preseason schedule. Even on the road, the Surfriders had an edge in just about every area. The final 1:27 was wild and wooly, Roosevelt missing on opportunities to take the lead. It took two clutch free throws by Noah Ah Yat with […]
