Santiago leads USA Today defense

By Jerry Campany on January 1, 2016

The USA Today released its all state team for Hawaii football, and the names at the top are the same as the Star-Advertiser’s list. Vavae Malepeai of Mililani is the offensive player of the year, and Kahuku’s Keala Santiago and Vavae Tata are the state’s top defensive player and coach. The list is representative of the whole state, especially on defense where the Red Raiders landed only two players with Hirkley Latu joining Santiago. Tata was adamant with local media […]

Terukina rises to No. 2 in boys P4P

By Jerry Campany on December 30, 2015

Experience counts. Only four senior boys are going for their fourth medal at this year’s state tournament, and all four of them are ranked in the pound-for-pound top 10. They are: No. 1 Liam Corbett: first, second, fifth No. 2 Blaysen Terukina: First, third, third No. 7 Jake Nakasone: fourth, fifth, fourth No. 10 Zack Diamond: Fourth, second, second Judging by that, perhaps Terukina should be at the top spot. But as his summer heroics fade, the fact that he […]

Fellow captain Brian Pascua was not needed, winning his finals match by forfeit in the 42-27 win. Akina prepared to file suit against Kahuku

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2015

Silence is not golden, according to Alan Akina. The Kahuku boys basketball coach was forced to step down over the weekend, and he does not plan on going away quietly. “We’ve been trying to reach them, the school administration, but they won’t return my calls,” said Akina’s attorney, Eric Seitz. “I’m in a position to help them resolve this. Without any contact, we’re going to end up suing them.” Akina declined to comment, but sources indicate that a parents meeting […]

She went 6-0 in the two tournaments, with four pins and a major decision. Molokai’s Alexandria Simon went the distance against her in the Paani final but failed to score, losing 5-0. Peralta is […]

Malepeai leads Star-Advertiser All-State team

By Jerry Campany on December 25, 2015

Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai left Aloha Stadium disappointed last month after his Trojans fell short of another state title, but he had to know that one game does not define a career. The Oregon commit broke Joe Igber‘s touchdown record this year and has accepted a haul of awards. But other than the Hall of Honor, today’s might be the biggest. He is the Star-Advertiser’s Offensive Player of the Year. Kahuku’s Keala Santiago is the defensive player of the year and […]
