Patton sharpens speed, agility essentials (+video)

By Nick Abramo on April 24, 2016

Vavae Malepeai was there. So was Tua Tagovailoa. It was raining, but that didn’t bother any of the athletes in attendance for a speed and quickness session with coach Kenny Patton last Sunday at the Saint Louis School football field. Malepeai will be shipping out to Los Angeles — for the USC football team — after graduating from Mililani in May. Tagovailoa will be committing to one of a handful of finalists among his 19 Division I college offers in […]

Punahou perks up too late (+ full box score)

By Nick Abramo on April 24, 2016

The bad news for Punahou is it came oh-so-close but failed to wrap up a baseball state tournament berth Saturday. The good news for the Buffanblu (11-8) is they still have two more chances to get it done. After yielding five runs to Mid-Pacific in the fifth inning, things looked bleak for Punahou. A 5-0 deficit appeared to be too much to overcome at the Owls’ home field. But, sometimes magic happens and it started to show up in the […]

Raiders went down fighting (+ full box score)

By Nick Abramo on April 23, 2016

‘Iolani went down fighting. The Raiders baseball team started the season strong, but hit the skids and finished the regular season 4-11. They righted the ship enough to beat contenders Saint Louis and Kamehameha in the postseason and nearly upset top-ranked Mid-Pacific on Friday. Instead, with one swing of the bat, the Owls’ Jacob Maekawa drilled a double to left field to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win, ending ‘Iolani’s season. Prior to […]

Two Cinderellas enter, one Cinderella leaves

By Paul Honda on April 23, 2016

Mirror images, maybe. Just not mirror results. When the Waipahu Marauders stepped into one of the vintage parks for baseball in the islands on Friday, it was as good as Cinderella arriving at the ball. After a 3-9 regular season in the OIA West, the Marauders knocked off Moanalua and Mililani in the first two rounds of the OIA playoffs. Kalani is on a fairy-tale run of its own, now 13-2 after pulling out a 3-2, eight-inning semifinal victory. Waipahu […]
