Possible formation if OIA-ILH union passes

By Nick Abramo on April 27, 2016

Some people will grumble. That’s just the way it is when you make suggestions on which football teams go in which divisions. So, let the grumbling begin. Here is a guesstimate at which schools would go where if the OIA-ILH football alliance gets the green light. To become a reality, it would have to be approved by the ILH heads of school on May 3 and also by the OIA principals at a date to be named. If it passes […]

Back to the future with OIA-ILH FB proposal

By Nick Abramo on April 27, 2016

In the link below, check out this mock OIA-ILH football alignment suggested in a Star-Bulletin commentary in 2003, calling for three divisions, including one super (Diamond) conference. It’s interesting to note the powers du jour were quite a bit different 13 years ago. Aiea and Pearl City have dropped off a bit since then and Waianae and Campbell have improved. At the time, a Waianae fan contacted the Star-Bulletin, incredulous that the Seariders would ever think about dropping down from […]

Big Q: 82 percent favor OIA-ILH FB alliance

By Nick Abramo on April 27, 2016

Of 874 people who voted either “yes” or “no” in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s “Big Q” today before 1:40 p.m., 82 percent favored a proposed OIA-ILH football alliance. The 82 percent figure does not factor in the 36 people who voted “not sure.” The vote totals were 719 in favor and 155 against. The Big Q is not a scientific poll. The football union between Oahu’s two leagues would create three tiers of competition instead of the two used now. It […]

OIA-ILH football super league is real possibility

By Hawaii Prep World on April 26, 2016

As reported by Ferd Lewis and Nick Abramo in Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, a possible 10-team super league composed of OIA and ILH football teams is being discussed and is expected to be voted on soon by both leagues. A compelling feature of the deal, called the “OIA-ILH Football Alliance Proposal,” includes $3 million in support from the business community. The money would be divided up by all of Oahu’s football-playing public schools, not just the ones in the proposed super […]

Kuratani & Wong: Catcher, Ace lead ‘Canes

By Paul Honda on April 26, 2016

There is nothing but pride on the West side once again, but this time, it’s the baseball team at Kapolei beaming. One year after Campbell’s HHSAA Division I state championship, it’s the Hurricanes making inroads at the D-II level. With a come-from-behind 9-4 win over Kalaheo on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park, the ‘Canes captured their first league title in D-II. Kamea Wong was resilient on the mound for coach Thomas Ebanez’s squad with nine strikeouts in 6 innings. He […]

Kalani hires Melemai as new football coach

By Nick Abramo on April 26, 2016

Scott Melemai is the new Kalani football head coach, according to Falcons athletic director Greg Van Cantfort. Melemai is a 1999 Kalani graduate and he has been with the football program since then. “He is passionate about football and has a very good understanding of the culture of the campus,” Van Cantfort said in a news release. “He understands the challenges of football at Kalani but hopes to continue building on the recent successes of the program.” Melemai is also […]

Brotherhood and another Kailua baseball title

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2016

For the 13th time in OIA history, the baseball championship belongs to the boys in blue from Kailua High School. The Surfriders opened an early lead and hung on for a 7-5 win over Kalani on Saturday for the league title at Hans L’Orange Park, and to a man, they handled it with maturity. “We worked so hard for this,” outfielder/pitcher Joey Cantillo said. “There was no way this game was getting away from us. Kalani is a good team […]
