Chin remains steady on winning putt (+ videos)

By Nick Abramo on April 21, 2016

Punahou’s Andrew Chin has been a successful Interscholastic League of Honolulu golfer for three years now. He placed third in the league championship as a freshman and seventh as a sophomore. As a junior? Well, on Thursday he broke through by hanging on for a victory over Kyle Suppa at the Turtle Bay Fazio Course. Chin now has the title of ILH champion, and he deserved it after the way he braved the final hole in front of a modest […]

When the student becomes the teacher

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2016

One of the most informative, even slightly entertaining, moments on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Middle School baseball field came not during a great battle between the Waianae Seariders and Roosevelt Rough Riders, but after. Moments after Roosevelt pitcher Hiram Kaikaina hurled a complete-game 6-5 win over the hardy Seariders, he and his teammates went about the usual post-game routine, tending to the diamond. Freshman second baseman Rylan Terakawa had himself, perhaps, the game of his life. He went 1-for-2 with […]

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2016

The Waianae Seariders nearly pulled off a great comeback win on Wednesday on the road in an OIA D-I playoff game against Roosevelt. Roosevelt prevailed 6-5, ending Waianae’s season. Instead of Walt Grilho, assistant coach Bernard Beaver was in charge. Grilho, their second-year head coach, said that he is “on leave.” Grilho was part of Kekoa Kaluhiokalani‘s staff and had been an assistant since 1998. He declined to comment during a phone conversation on Wednesday night, citing the school and […]

It was not too long ago that the Saint Louis baseball team was ranked No. 1 in the state. The Crusaders had rattled off six consecutive wins, including an impressive 4-1 victory over Mid-Pacific, and was on top of the ILH halfway through the regular season. Now, the Crusaders are forced to play the waiting game and may have taken the field for the final time on Tuesday in a 6-4 loss to ‘Iolani in the ILH second-round tournament. Saint […]

Moanalua golfers want to go a step further

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2016

Moanalua is proud of its 10 straight Oahu Interscholastic Association golf championships, but some of the players want to get that ultimate prize, the state team title. Na Menehune hasn’t done that since 2012, when the team’s current crop of seniors were in eighth grade. “Every year, our main goal is to win the state championship,” said junior Jun Ho Won, the medalist in the OIA individual championship and a big part of the team crown that Moanalua captured on […]
