Nam loses by 1 despite ‘pure’ shot (+ videos)

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2016

Poor Malia Nam. The Kaiser golfer placed second and was unable to defend her Oahu Interscholastic Association golf championship on Wednesday at Turtle Bay. Instead, Miki Manta —— the girl from rival Kalani —— won by a stroke. And this happened, in part, because Nam, in a sense, hit her approach “too good” on the finishing ninth at the Fazio Course. Yes indeed. Nam hit the 145-yard shot so good, she felt it. She called it “pure” after the round. So […]

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2016

It’s not easy for Abu Maafala to zero in on the highlight of his athletic career, so we’ll do it for him. How does tackling Reggie Bush sound?!!! You walk in to a party, meet some people, the conversation gets to football, you tell them you tackled Reggie Bush. Get this man a drink! Families, campers start petitions vs. NCAA

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2016

Up and down, down and up. The nature of football recruiting in the islands is unique, but when Pac-12 recruiters — and coaches from several other major conferences, plus small colleges and JCs — showed up to a PIAA-hosted combine years ago, it was a boon for local players. However, until last year’s Maximum Exposure Camp at the University of Hawaii campus, there was a drought imposed by the NCAA, prohibiting the presence of college coaches at what has since […]

Jun Ho Won is the latest recipient for Na Menehune, outlasting teammates Kyosuke Hara and Shawn Lu. Hara took the title last year with Brent Grant winning the year before that. John Oda won in 2012 and 2013. Moanalua has had a boy finish first or second every year during the streak except in […]

Coaches chime in on Okimoto’s suggestion

By Paul Honda on April 19, 2016

Twenty years since he first began coaching at his alma mater, Randall Okimoto has proven to be a speak softly kind of guy. That’s always intriguing considering he was a record-setting running back at Farrington who went on to play at the University of Hawaii, where he earned his degree. “I knew from the start of my college career I wanted to be an educator. And the only place I wanted to be at that time was here at Farrington […]

By Paul Honda on April 19, 2016

The Punahou Buffanblu have withstood the turbulence of the high-pressure storm known as ILH baseball. As of Saturday, with a 4-2 win over Saint Louis, the Buffanblu (10-7) find themselves sharing the drivers’ seat of the league’s double-elimination playoff tournament. “This is more like a fresh start to the season,” pitcher/designated hitter Noah Goss said. “We could get back at these guys because they swept us.” It wasn’t just about Geoffrey Moore’s poised performance on the mound or the timely […]
