Waianae’s Rosario gives added zest to backfield

By Nick Abramo on August 18, 2016

Senior Javen Towne has been lugging the football out of the Waianae varsity football team’s triple option for three years now. He’s a tough customer. He can plow up the middle. The 5-foot-8, 190-pounder can also use his speed and moves. Then there’s senior Jorell Pontes-Borje (5-9, 175), another person in the fourth-ranked Seariders’ backfield who we in the media have written and talked about for the past three years. Speedy, elusive, can catch. It gets deeper, with plenty of […]

Wednesday recruiting update

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2016

Hawaii High School Football Recruiting Tracker A couple of recruiting tidbits. Waianae’s Kanai Mauga, a junior defensive end listed at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, told me Sunday that he has received a scholarship offer from Oregon State. Mauga was a beast against Kapolei last Saturday. He completely blew up the right tackle blocking him on the Hurricanes’ first two passing plays and was then double-teamed for most of the game. He had a tipped pass at the line and also got […]

That’s because head coach Marco Antonio Gloria and his family moved to Sweden in July, according to Cougars acting athletic director Bryan Almadova. “He was promoted to an overseas position for the company he works for,” Almadova said about Gloria. “I miss him big time. He will be in Sweden for two and a half years. He announced it […]

By Nick Abramo on August 16, 2016

St. Francis senior Taylor Lau orally committed to a four-year scholarship to play for the University of Denver. Lau won state high school titles as a freshman and junior and will be going for a third championship this spring. According to Robert Lau, Taylor’s father, she likes the Pioneers’ coaching staff, academic offerings and the campus and will decide between pre-medical and IT. As a junior, Lau defeated Punahou’s Alyssia Fossorier in the 6-1, 6-4 in the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State […]

Tagovailoa is back at practice + VIDEO

By Nick Abramo on August 16, 2016

Two of the main characters in what turned out to be a mini drama on Monday were absolutely correct: Tua Tagovailoa was at practice Tuesday, just as his dad, Galu Tagovailoa, and his head coach, Cal Lee, said he would be. There was a panic set in motion Monday, when Tagovailoa tweeted, “Farewell to the Lou.” Many people took it to mean the Saint Louis star quarterback with a full scholarship offer to Alabama was leaving the Crusaders. It was […]
