UPDATE: Tua tweets: ‘Brothers are forever’

By Nick Abramo on August 15, 2016

Twitter is a funny bird. It’s a world where it’s hard to tell what’s true and what’s not. Tua Tagovailoa tweeted “Farewell to the Lou” today. Some people took that to mean that the star quarterback who has committed to play for Alabama in 2017 is leaving Saint Louis now. That is NOT TRUE, according to Galu Tagovailoa, his father, who told Hawaii Prep World early Monday evening that Tua will remain as the quarterback of the Crusaders. Galu said […]

Crusaders get first-place votes in new rankings

By Hawaii Prep World on August 15, 2016

The defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders opened their season with a 49-15 win over Leilehua on Friday to run their winning streak to 14 games. They kept their No. 1 ranking in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 released Monday but were not a unanimous pick like they were a week earlier. Saint Louis (0-0), which has only played one quarter of a canceled game, picked up the other two first-place votes and remains second in […]

No. 9 Kailua gets it done in opener

By Brian McInnis on August 14, 2016

It wasn’t very pretty, but Kailua found a way to start a second straight season off with a victory under coach Joseph Wong. The host Surfriders prevailed 16-13 over Moanalua on Saturday night, relying heavily on their defense and some timely plays by senior Mark Lagazo on offense. “We’re missing some (ineligible) guys, we come back full strength next week,” Wong said. “I told them, it’s going to be a hard-fought battle tonight, regardless of whoever we play. Hold tight […]

Sabers searching for consistency

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 14, 2016

Campbell’s defense accomplished one of its primary objectives on Saturday. But sustained execution on offense remained elusive in a 34-14 loss to Farrington at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. After giving up 114 yards to Farrington running back Challen Faamatau last season and 142 to Ranan Mamiya the year before, the Sabers entered their regular-season opener looking to contain the Governors’ running game. They did that for the most part, keeping Faamatau from breaking loose while allowing 44 yards on 22 attempts […]

The battle afoot matters to Men of Troy

By Paul Honda on August 14, 2016

He loves defense. True, his meticulously-engineered, high-powered offenses in recent years entered ridonkulous territory, but when Mililani coach Rod York knuckles down on the inner workings of daily preparation, the Trojans understand full well that means tightening the screws and hammering every nail that stands out. Seventh-ranked Mililani (1-0) took it one step further, perhaps, on Saturday night in a 42-7 win over Kaiser. It’s now special teams that gets as much sweat equity. “We spend as much time on […]

Hot start for Governors’ QB rotation

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 14, 2016

There was little separation between Justin Uahinui and Bishop Rapoza going into Farrington’s season opener and perhaps even less after the eighth-ranked Governors’ 34-14 win over Campbell on Saturday at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The senior quarterbacks rotated every two plays and got off to a blistering start in completing 12 of 13 combined throws while helping the Governors’ take a 28-0 lead in the first half. Both cooled in the second, alternating in a run of seven straight incompletions, while […]

Waianae runs its way to another big win

By Billy Hull on August 14, 2016

Turns out it was all just a tease. That Waianae four-wide passing attack on display in the second half of a season-opening win against Kamehameha was stashed away Saturday night in Kapolei. Instead, it was back to the traditional Seariders’ triple-option rushing attack that left Kapolei gasping for air. In a matchup of teams ranked in the top five in the state, the fourth-seeded Seariders established themselves as the biggest threat to Kahuku’s OIA crown with a 35-14 thumping of […]
