By Jerry Campany on December 22, 2017

Everything is going according to form on the boys side of the Officials Tournament after the first day except in the team standings. Leilehua still holds a slim lead in the team race, by 2.5 points over Saint Louis and 5.5 over Kamehameha. The Mules are hanging tough in the precursor to states, where they have not finished above seventh place in the last decade. Last year Leilehua was tenth. Hunter Nagatani (113), Isaac Stalcup (126), Kaena Desantos (132), Jhael […]

By Jerry Campany on December 22, 2017

Tomorrow’s semifinals are set at the Hawaii Officials Tournament with Leilehua still in the lead in the team race. Baldwin has snuck into second place with Moanalua in third. Wynter Brown of Pearl City pulled off the biggest upset in the quarterfinals, sticking Lahainaluna’s Kauanoe Keahi in 3:26 to prevent an anticipated big finals matchup with Baldwin’s Jahnei Miguel. Keahi is ranked No. 10 in Hawaiiprepworld’s pound-for-pound and Miguel sits at No. 8. Brown beat Maudestie Alvarado of Nanakuli in […]

Pupule ballot: From #1 (Maryknoll) to #21 (Kahuku)

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2017

The ILH is ahead of most leagues when it comes to preseason performance in girls basketball. Rugged is the word in a league where the lower half had been successful against perennial powerhouses. This ballot was submitted on Sunday for Monday’s Star-Advertiser Top 10 release. Here’s how I voted. (All win-loss records as of Saturday, Dec. 16.) Pupule BKG Top 10 12/17/17 1. Maryknoll Spartans (14-1, 3-0 ILH) Pupule ranking last week: No. 1. Last week’s games W 46-38 #2 […]

Q&A: Kailua sharpshooter Everett Torres-Kahapea

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2017

Year three as a varsity hoopster at Kailua High School brings a different role to Everett Torres-Kahapea. The junior guard leads by example, and learning to become a more vocal leader is something he embraces. He’d rather lead by example first, and that seems to be working for the Surfriders, who are 11-4 in nonconference play. His latest highlight: swishing a game-winning 37-foot 3-pointer in the closing seconds of a win over Waiakea at the St. Francis Holiday Hoops Classic […]

Makaula sparks No. 1 Punahou over No. 5 St. Francis

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2017

Once again, the St. Francis Saints took aim and did all it could to slay Goliath. Once again, the tiny school in Manoa Valley fell short. Just a wee bit short. Kaulana Makaula provided the offensive spark with 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as No. 1 Punahou outlasted No. 5 St. Francis 74-66 in the final of the St. Francis Holiday Hoops Classic on Thursday night. Punahou improved to 12-1 overall and won’t be on the […]

Officials Tournament brackets feature intriguing matchups

By Billy Hull on December 21, 2017

The second big wrestling event of the season takes place at Leilehua on Friday and Saturday and the Officials Tournament has some exciting matchups in certain brackets. Coordinator Rick Williams cautions that it looks like some wrestlers may have entered the wrong weight classes, so a lot can change on on these brackets before tomorrow morning. But if they hold up, it promises to be quite a show over the next two days. There is a big clash looming in […]
