Punahou takes control of ILH boys soccer race

By Christian Shimabuku on December 21, 2017

Thursday afternoon’s boys soccer match between Saint Louis and Punahou was an early battle for first place in the ILH, as the Buffanblu and Crusaders both entered undefeated with no ties. The contest proved to be a true measuring stick for the Crusaders, who made the move back to Division I after appearing in last season’s HHSAA Division II finals. Punahou, meanwhile, is the two-time defending state champion in D-I. In the end, Punahou’s experience and composure proved too much […]

‘Iolani Classic: A breakdown of each local team

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2017

I saw nothing on Friday. Then I watched 27 games over the next five days and it was Christmas Day over and over. Friday was opening day of the ‘Iolani Classic, but an ILH girls showdown between No. 1 Maryknoll and No. 2 Kamehameha was a must-see. On Saturday, I got to see Fairfax coached by Steve Baik for the first time. They won by 50. He’s good. They’re good. Jefferson walloped their foe. Montverde hung 95 on its opponent. […]

New high school sports seasons bring new coaches, and there has been some changes in Hawaii for this winter. One change Hawaii Prep World has learned about is for the the spring sport of baseball, where Wes Yonamine is the new head coach at Pearl City. He takes over for Peter Arakawa, who spent one year as the Chargers’ coach in place of the previous head man, Gavin Concepcion. Getting back to winter sports, Shelley Izuno takes over for Starr […]

Warriors, Mustangs make best of dire straits

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2017

Six is better than five, and five is certainly better than four. When Kamehameha took the court on Tuesday morning against Kalaheo, it was an unusual scenario. The Warriors warmed up with just six players, all underclassmen. There were 5 minutes left in warmup time for the 10:30 a.m. consolation game at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic, but at least Kamehameha was there. There was no sight of Kalaheo. The Mustangs arrived a minute later, and officials allowed them an extra […]

You can see the full team here. As a treat for Hawaii Prep World readers, we counted down to the release of the team by looking at some of the greats of years past. Because they were so popular, we will keep going and eventually have a list of every all-star team […]

Mitchell steps up in title game for Montverde

By Paul Honda on December 20, 2017

One brother watched from the bench, healing up from injury. His twin struggled from time to time, collecting fouls instead of rebounds and points. When Makhel Mitchell racked up the PFs (personal fouls) in the semifinal round and the tough Lions of Fairfax nearly rallied from a 20-point deficit. Montverde, the nation’s No. 1 team — or No. 2, depending on the poll — emerged stronger. Mitchell heard the words of his brother, Makhi: “Run the floor. Dominate inside.” Makhel […]

LIVE BLOG: Early Signing Day for 2018

By Hawaii Prep World on December 20, 2017

The early signing period allowed for football this year has made recruiting a little different this year. Some of Hawaii’s top recruits in the class of 2018 are taking that opportunity to sign early, including Pearl City’s Zion Tupuola-Fetui. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end at Pearl City looks like a perfect fit at BUCK linebacker for the Washington Huskies. Tupuola-Fetui signed his national letter of intent this morning before school started. Tupuola-Fetui, who chose Washington over an impressive list of […]
