Washington erased all self-doubt for Tupuola-Fetui

By Christian Shimabuku on December 20, 2017

Pearl City senior Zion Tupuola-Fetui became one of the first players from Hawaii to take advantage of new rules that allowed him to sign his National Letter of Intent early, putting his commitment to Washington in ink on Wednesday morning. If you were to tell him he would be in this position a year ago, he probably would have laughed. “I wouldn’t believe you,” he said. “Not for a second.” The towering defensive end and outside linebacker, who projects to […]

LIVE BLOG: ‘Iolani Classic, day 5

By Paul Honda on December 20, 2017

The finale is here. I’m going to miss the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. Watching seven to eight basketball games every day is a sign of wellness, not illness, no matter what a few people might intimate. Especially when there is 1) air conditioning, 2) great hospitality, 3) a beautiful venue, 4) sacred, yet graceful tradition. I need no Christmas presents, though I appreciate new socks all the time. This is Christmas. Thank you, God Almighty. Listed rankings are from our Star-Advertiser […]

Cabanban headlines boys pound-for-pound rankings

By Jerry Campany on December 20, 2017

If the girls side of the wrestling scene is all about the future, the boys are about right now. Seniors dominate Hawaii Prep World’s preseason boys pound-for-pound rankings, with nine of the top 10 participating in their final high school season. Only No. 4 Kysen Terukina of Kamehameha, a sophomore, will have more prep wrestling in his future after the state championships. The list begins where it will probably end next year, with Corey Cabanban the class of the state. […]

Alo is No. 1 in first pound-for-pound rankings

By Jerry Campany on December 19, 2017

The first edition of the 2017 girls pound-for-pound rankings might as well be a national list. The top five girls on the list are all nationally ranked in their weight classes, led by Kelani Corbett of Leilehua and Farrington’s Lavenia Fotu in the top two. Kahuku senior Teniya Alo starts the year where she finished it last year, at the top spot. Last season she was the hunter, chasing down Radford’s Angela Peralta and taking her crown late in the […]

By Jerry Campany on December 19, 2017

The 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser football All-State teams were published on Sunday with Saint Louis quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and Waianae linebacker Kana’i Mauga winning top honors in the state. You can see the full team here. As a treat for Hawaii Prep World readers, we counted down to the release of the team by looking at some of the greats of years past. Because they were so popular, we will keep going and eventually have a list of every all-star team […]

LIVE BLOG: ‘Iolani Classic, day 4

By Paul Honda on December 19, 2017

It’s early in the day and day four is underway. It’s 75 degrees and overcast outside, slight breeze and not much humidity. In the air-conditioned confines of the Lower Gym of ‘Iolani’s Father Bray Athletic Complex, all is well. Scores and Wednesday’s schedule are at the bottom of this post. Note: Kamren Victorino-Kato of Kamehameha became the first local-school entrant to win the tournament’s slam dunk contest. Trevin Wade of Montverde was runner-up, and Kamaka Hepa of Jefferson (Portland, Ore.) […]

Montverde basketball is a treat to watch

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2017

He doesn’t get too low, but R.J. Barrett certainly can get high in the sky. The Montverde (Fla.) senior continued to absolutely wow fans at the ‘Iolani Classic on Monday, throwing down eight dunks and scoring 33 points in an 89-43 quarterfinal win over host ‘Iolani. Barrett, who will play at Duke next season, and his teammates played like a force that is especially good at globetrotting for basketball. When coach Kevin Boyle implored them to step up their concentration […]
