The 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser football All-State teams were published on Sunday with Saint Louis quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and Waianae linebacker Kana’i Mauga winning top honors in the state. You can see the full team here. As a treat for Hawaii Prep World readers, we counted down to the release of the team by looking at some of the greats of years past. Because they were so popular, we will keep going and eventually have a list of every all-star team […]

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2017

Punahou collected nine of 13 possible first-place votes to land at No. 1 in the season debut of the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 today. This is the first time in recent memory that five Interscholastic League of Honolulu programs have occupied the first five positions in the poll. The Buffanblu (9-1), with a stacked senior-heavy roster of immense talent, quickness and end-to-end defensive pressure, have not lost to a local team yet. They went 3-1 in the recent Classic […]

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2017

Day 3 of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic is quarterfinal-round time, and those games don’t start until 3:30 p.m. Consolation play tipped off at 9 a.m. I was hoping to be here, had other obligations, like a feature story on one of the top scoring guards in the islands, a couple of Top 10 polls. Good stuff. I’ll keep posting here throughout the day and night as I shoot video. And if R.J. Barrett enters the slam dunk contest on Tuesday […]

The Crusaders will finish the year as the highest ranked team nationally […]

By Jerry Campany on December 17, 2017

Seniors brought the lumber in the 2017 edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State football teams that were released on Sunday. Seniors took 20 of the 26 spots on the first team led by Players of the Year Chevan Cordeiro of Saint Louis and Waianae linebacker Kana’i Mauga. It is their first time on the first team, something they have in common with 17 other seniors. Only Saint Louis linebacker Noa Purcell repeated from last year after Waianae running back Rico […]

Christmas came early in ’17; plans for ’18 in works

By Nick Abramo on December 17, 2017

Christmas came early for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association this year. The Division II state football tournament in November was like a big, bright, red and green present under the tree that Lahainaluna and Konawaena opened slowly and with intense anticipation as the seven overtime periods marched on with the Lunas prevailing 75-69. But the early-arriving Santa Claus did not stop there. The whole package — Open, Division I and Division II — was intricately woven and tied together […]

Jefferson’s 6-10 center, Hepa, embraces island roots

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2017

Alaska can be a chilling place to grow up, but Kamaka Hepa called it home for most of his young life. Hepa is literally the biggest part of a Jefferson Democrats basketball team that won the 6A state championship in Oregon last season. Portland, Ore. Hepa, a 6-foot-10 senior, made the move from Alaska to Oregon two years ago. “In Alaska, getting exposure is down,” Hepa said of college recruiting. The move probably helped. Hepa signed with Texas and will […]
