Leilehua’s boys wrestling team matched its girls crew with the team lead after the first two rounds of the Officials tournament at Leilehua.
The Mules scored 62.5 points to lead Kamehameha (56) and Saint Louis (55).
Even without Brett Barefoot, Leilehua got pins from a slew of wrestlers in the winner’s bracket. Hunter Nagatani (113), Joseph Anzaldua (120), Isaac Stalcup (126), Kaena DeSantos (132), Jhael Jose (145), Keanu Punley (170), Edward Kelly (182), Daniel Schmidt (196) and Jonah Caminos-Freitas (220) all stuck their second-round opponents for the Mules.
Joseph Vento of Waiakea pulled off the lone big upset in the first two rounds, beating Mililani’s Dylan Cuesta 11-4 in the first round and upsetting second seed Brandon Aphongphong of Kapolei with a pin in 5:59 in the second round.
Vento gets Joshua Paz of Campbell in the quarterfinals, which will begin around 8 p.m.
Corey Cabanban of Saint Louis needed all of 28 seconds to dispatch Jace Graves of Kalaheo in the second round. He will face Isaac Hokama of Roosevelt. Each of the top 10 in the pound-for-pound won easily (four pins, two major decisions and one technical fall) except No. 10 Christian Tavares of Radford, who narrowly beat Kamehameha’s Kanai Tapia 8-6. Tavares meets Vincent Terrell of Punahou later tonight.
Terrell has pinned both opponents he has faced today.
