Leilehua was the big winner of the prep football all-star teams with receiver Phillip Ke-a and defensive tackle Junior Tyrell sweeping the top awards from both newspapers. The 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser football All-State teams were published on Sunday with Saint Louis quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and Waianae linebacker Kana’i Mauga winning top honors in the state. Maryknoll takes consolation title at Tark Classic

The Maryknoll Spartans finished 3-1 with a consolation title at the Tarkanian Classic today in Las Vegas. Maryknoll defeated Gillette (Wyo.) 53-50 today for ninth place. Spartans center Isabella Cravens and wing Kamalu Kamakawiwo‘ole were selected to the all-tournament team. The Spartans, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10, opened the tournament with a heartbreaking 49-47 overtime loss to Post Falls (Idaho). The boys and girls semifinals at the Officials tournament have finished at Leilehua High gym. There was a huge upset at 113 pounds with defending state champion and No. 4 pound-for-pound Kysen Terukina getting pinned by Baldwin freshman Kahilihiwa Joy. Joy went on to pin his opponent, unseeded Jude Michael Talana, in the final in 35 seconds. Loud cheers erupted at the Leilehua gym as Baldwin freshman Kahilihiwa Joy pinned Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina in the semifinals of the Officials tournament. Joy was down 5-0 when he pulled off the pin of Terukina, who won the state championship at 113 pounds last season and is ranked No. 4 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings. Freshman Shayna Kamaka had an upset in view, but she couldn’t pull it off in the Officials wrestling tournament at Leilehua on Friday. The Baldwin wrestler at 168 pounds was in front of two-time state champion Kelani Corbett of Leilehua by two points with 39 seconds left in the quarterfinals.
