Pupule ballot: #1 to #35; Baldwin, Maui fear Lunas

By Paul Honda on December 27, 2017

Maybe it’s the soccer effect. Volleyball? Softball. All of the above? Pegging 35 teams and ranking them in girls basketball is not as fluid or smooth as it is with boys basketball, but I give it the ol’ pupule try. After all, the state’s best programs are as good as ever. Maryknoll has dominated local teams, hungry after back-to-back runner-up finishes at the state tourney. Kamehameha is still the second-best team in the rankings despite losing center Kalina Obrey (hand) […]

Waialua won its fourth straight rural OIA championship in 1955, needing a playoff win over Castle after the two teams finished the season with identical 9-1 records. The Bulldogs dominated the league all-star team with six selections. Waipahu quarterback Bob Tokunaga, Waialua fullback Kenneth Souza and Castle utility player Clarence Young were unanimous choices by the Star-Bulletin. Waialua end Tom Shizuru and tackle Stanley Takenaka were repeat selections. Roosevelt won the ILH championship and led the league all-star team with […]

Q&A: Saint Louis All-State DL Faatui Tuitele

By Paul Honda on December 26, 2017

Faatui Tuitele is spending the morning after Christmas in a classroom. Driver’s Education isn’t mandatory at Saint Louis, but it’s the quickest, safest and most efficient way, he says, to get a driver’s license. “Freedom. You don’t have to rely on your parents to pick you up and drop you off. You can just take yourself,” he said. “I’ve ridden The Bus probably 40 or 50 times in my whole life. I’m taking the class, then it’s behind the wheel, […]

The force of Robinson lands Lunas in boys Top 10

By Paul Honda on December 26, 2017

Maybe it was overdue, but the voters are convinced about the Lahainaluna Lunas now. The Lunas have won three of their last four games, including victories over then-No. 10 Moanalua and a lopsided win over Baldwin. Coaches and media sent Lahainaluna all the way up to No. 8 after the West Maui hoopsters were unranked through the first two weeks of the poll. Senior Koa Evalu Robinson was a revelation at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. The 6-foot-4 post demonstrated the […]

The Lady Falcons, 6-0 in OIA East play, visit unranked Kahuku on Wednesday night. Maryknoll remained the unanimous pick by coaches and media as the No. 1 team. The Spartans won three of four games at the […]

The high school football season finally come to an end across the country over the weekend. A state championship in Texas was decided and the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series included Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore rolling Bingham (Utah), 41-3. Bingham had defeated Hawaii runner-up Kahuku, without starting quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, 17-0 in September. Saint Louis (10-0) moved up one more spot to finish 15th in the nation in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25. That’s the best finish by a Hawaii […]

2008 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on December 25, 2017

The 2008 prep football season began with Leilehua quarterback Andrew Manley, coming off his improbable run from the junior varsity team to leading the Mules to the 2007 state championship, trying to get back to another state final. The Mules did exactly that, but couldn’t overcome a stacked Punahou team led by the highest-rated recruit ever to come out of Hawaii. Buffanblu linebacker Manti Te’o was named the high school athlete of the year by the Sporting News and repeated […]
