By Paul Honda on December 29, 2017

No, it’s not a typo. In fact, Everett Torres-Kahapea had no idea how many points he was scoring and scoring and scoring in Kailua’s clutch 84-80 overtime victory over Moanalua on Thursday night. The junior’s 42 points, a career high, was needed in every way by the Surfriders. Their versatile 6-foot-6 junior, Isaiah Hopson, left the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter. Lydell Romero stepped up. Moanalua kept bringing tough man-to-man defense, changing defenders on Torres-Kahapea. “My […]

The newspapers differed on the defensive player of the year. The Advertiser was impressed with ‘Iolani nose guard Junior Tufono, who had a game-high 14 tackles in the Prep Bowl, and named him their defensive […]

The future is now for Kahuku’s Lady Raiders

By Paul Honda on December 27, 2017

There’s something to be said for a five-game win streak. After all, not all humans have experienced this, whether it was youth league, professional sports or right here in high school. The Kalani Falcons had this. They arrived in Kahuku on a cloudy, cool evening ready to defend their place atop the OIA East girls basketball standings. Kalani. In first place. By 9 o’clock, the lofty perch was one to be shared. Kahuku’s young hoopsters opened a 16-point lead and […]

By Jerry Campany on December 27, 2017

Lahainaluna’s Kainalu Estrella jumped into the fourth spot of the latest pound-for-pound rankings, making him the highest ranked wrestler from Maui and best without a state title. Estrella, who has reached the final the last two years only to lose both times, ran through his bracket at Officials after challenging No. 2 Zayren Terukina on Maui only to fall. He takes the spot previously occupied by Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina, who had his match well in hand before getting caught by […]

By Jerry Campany on December 27, 2017

Pearl City’s Jennie Fuamatu tested herself against the best and walked away better for it. Fuamatu, the reigning champion at 186 pounds, entered Kelani Corbett‘s realm at 168 and reached the final before falling 11-3 to the state’s No. 2-ranked wrestler. The match was closer than the score indicated, but the Mules’ pure wrestling skills and flawless game plan proved to be too much. Despite the loss, the Charger moves up a spot to No. 5 in the latest pound-for-pound […]
