Alameda’s heroics underscore Hilo’s blue-collar grit

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2017

Most of the Hilo Vikings weren’t born yet the last time the program won a state championship in boys basketball. It was 2000, when Jason Mandaquit and his blonde hairdo ran the point for the team that carried 13 sticks bound together from one gym to the next. With Wes Martinez fortifying the team, leaving his beloved rooster behind in Ka‘u to play with childhood pal Mandaquit, the Vikings were a team of destiny. It was the final state title […]

By Friday night, the fifth-ranked Saints had a stunning 55-48 upset win over No. 2 Maryknoll at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. They did it despite leading scorer Kameron Ng sitting for almost the […]

Thursday hoops: A wild day all over Oahu

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2017

Kapolei at Mililani sounded like a game without a lot of pizazz. I was still interested, though, when the assignment came my way. How does Kapolei respond after a week of outstanding basketball? Mililani might not be at powerhouse form this year, but they’ll be scrappy, and they’ll be playing at home. Stranger things have happened. But to supplement my diet of hoops, I squeezed in a quarterfinal game at the Punahou Invitational. St. Francis against the mighty Cherokee of […]

By Jerry Campany on December 29, 2017

There might not be another season in the history of prep football in Hawaii that had a bigger clear-cut winner of the offensive player of the year award. Saint Louis’ Timmy Chang still holds the record today for most passing yards in a season, finishing with 3,985 yards and 64 touchdowns for the Crusaders to headline the 1999 prep football all-star teams. His best target was senior Gerald Welch, who also holds the single-season state receiving mark of 1,689 yards […]
