Unlike other tournaments, weight classes are split into three levels to ensure each girl in the draw gets quality mat time regardless of ability. Last year, 247 girls participated in the event. During Saint Louis’ streak of 13 consecutive Prep Bowls, 1996 was a rare year. Despite the Crusaders’ continued success, the Star-Bulletin looked to two other ILH schools for its offensive and defensive players of the year. Punahou receiver Tafiti Uso, who had six 100-yard receiving games, including a career-high 192 yards in a three-point win over Kamehameha, earned the top offensive honors. ‘Iolani defensive lineman Ed Ta’amu was the defensive player of the year. Punahou’s depth proves too much for St. Francis

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2017

In the end, once again, the heavyweight outmuscled the welterweight. Top-ranked Punahou took everything No. 5 St. Francis had to offer and persevered for a 59-52 win on Saturday night in the final of the Punahou Invitational. “It was a good pressure game for us. It was good for us, even though it wasn’t a perfect game,” Buffanblu coach Darren Matsuda said. “Our execution on offense, we have our standard and we didn’t get there. (St. Francis’) defense is real […]
