Punahou still No. 1, Campbell arrives at No. 10

James Campbell High School gymnasium. Paul Honda/Star-Advertiser (Nov. 29, 2017)

Punahou still reigns, Kamehameha got a little love, Campbell walked in and Kailua has been bumped off in the latest Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10.

The Buffanblu won their Punahou Invitational title and improved to 16-1 in nonconference play. Coaches and media gave them nine of the 10 first-place votes.

Kamehameha (13-3) collected one first-place vote after winning three of four games in The Classic at Damien (Ontario, Calif.) over the weekend.

Campbell (10-5) enters the Top 10 for the first time since 2015. The Sabers are 3-0 in the OIA West after wins over Waianae and Radford. They outpointed Kalani, which upset then-No. 10 Kailua, for the final position in the poll.

Also getting some appreciation from voters are Moanalua, Roosevelt and Saint Louis.

The ILH regular season tips off on Thursday.

The ILH Agenda bias is strong in this poll. It’s a good thing that biased polls mean nothing. RRFL!

So the Top 5 ILH Teams are 35-1 vs the OIA Teams but there is a bias. Facts always win arguments sparky. Enjoy the Consolation Side if the Draw.

If the poll means nothing, why do you even care?

Can anyone tell me why St. Francis is not in DI? They are DII State Champs. Look they are #3 so they should move up or am I wrong? Or they just sandbaggers!

When I look at Hawaii Basketball, I can’t take it serious at all. How can they allow a D2 team to top the polls? This is exactly why this sport can’t be taken seriously here. Either that D2 team should move up and help their ILH counterparts in adding one more spot for the ILH in the State Tournament (since the bids are based on how many members the conference has) or, NO D1 team should play them.

I mean, why should a D1 team play them, if they are unwilling to help their ILH counterparts in this matter. They would probably fight and win one of those three ILH spots. Their coach claims that they can’t compete day in and day out with the bigger teams. Boo boo….neither can Mid Pac, and neither can MOST OIA teams.

So, since they don’t want to do the right thing and move up to their correct division, the word should spread around to NOT play this team at all in the pre season. That way, the sports writers will stop pretending and writing about how this D2 team keeps beating D1 teams.

They are an ILH team and have been recruiting so they should be able to compete! How can they be praised on beating D1 teams not at full capacity in PRE SEASON, while the same writers give Kamehameha a pass for losing to Kapolei because it’s only Pre Season and they played their reserves…please…a game is a game…anyone who thinks differently, well, that’s why they probably never played beyond high school….

Keep praising a lower division for beating your top division teams and you will keep watering down this sport. No one gets recruited here already, this only makes it worse.

And please St. Francis people, stop spreading rumors about 5’6” point guards getting offers from Big Named D1 schools. No college coach believes their savior plays in the ILH D2….some people actually know the coaches of the teams you claim the offers are from. The only D1 player that was looked at out of Hawaii was Hogland. Everyone else got their looks in the mainland….Avea in Utah, Villa in WV, Fotu in FIBA & NZ, Tolu in Miss.

    Period…

STOP RECRUITING!!! As an avid basketball parent, I see and hear a lot about schools recruiting kids from ANYWHERE.

Also, OIA refs need to go back to school and learn to make an accurate call.. they are HORRIBLE

Geez, I wonder who gave Kamehameha their vote *eye roll*. . .Punahou should’ve been unanimous.

  9. PlayaHatersAnonymous January 2, 2018 11:42 am

The polls were generated after DII (because of the school size is small) Saint Francis defeated the previous #3 Maryknoll and played Punahou in 2 Tournament Finals, and everyone seen how this DII Saint Francis isn’t a DI because their not a big size team, just bigger heart then these so called DI teams, Kill yourselves with that!

Mustangs are all recruited, you just recruited poorly because you haven’t made Championship games since you fired Alika Smith, so go recruit a good coach first!

  11. ILH January 4, 2018 8:48 am

    Sounds like a win-win situation.

    You win, David slay’s Goliath.

You lose, “ah were only a small DII team, but , with a DI heart”.

Maybe you guys should start recruiting for Basketball, sure as heck do it for football or start to teach those Tongan kids you recruited how to play Basketball, theyre all over 6 feet tall.

  12. PlayaHatersAnonymous January 4, 2018 1:55 pm

ILH they would start for Kahuku in basketball and Football because they got more heart! They only need to focus on Football because one day BIG RED will clash in a preseason with SAINTS BLUE and see how the small DI School with heart breaks Your Heart! I hate smack talkers!
