‘Iolani’s senior midfielder Alex Liu was named the Hawaii Gatorade boys soccer player of the year by the Gatorade Company recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. The 5-foot-5, 135-pound Liu scored 15 goals and added 17 assists, leading the Raiders (14-4-3) to the Division I state quarterfinals. Roosevelt’s Mari Foster was named as the Hawaii Gatorade softball player of the year by the Gatorade Company recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. The 5-foot-7 senior outfielder and right-handed pitcher led the Rough Riders (15-3) to the Division I tournament play-in game. Day two of the GPA Showcase football combine pitted many of the state’s top offensive and defensive linemen in battles before noted coaches like Jesse Sapolu, Maa Tanuvasa, Leo Goeas and Isaac Sopoaga. The finalists wound up in a final battle of the trenches at the close of the 2.5-hour session.

Tanner Nishioka, an ‘Iolani alumnus who was a ninth-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox out of Pomona-Pitzer last season, was called up to Double-A Portland today. Nishioka is getting the start at designated hitter and batting seventh for the Sea Dogs tonight against Akron. Hawaii was well represented with four of the 50 players selected to the VolleyballMag.com Boys Fab 50, which ranks the top 50 high school boys volleyball seniors in the country. The list of 50, which was released Friday, is in alphabetical order with no distinction made among the top 50 after the top five.
