Polynesian Player of the Year Watch List announced

Fifty players are in the running for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award. The watch list, announced Thursday, includes 14 players with Hawaii ties. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that epitomizes great ability and integrity. Former winners of the award include quarterback Marcus Mariota (Saint Louis) in 2014 and defensive lineman Hercules Mata’afa in 2017. Northwestern football has a tradition established in 2011 of giving the No. 1 jersey for the season to a deserving student-athlete. This year’s recipient of that jersey is Chad Hanaoka a 2014 ‘Iolani alumnus who made his on-field debut for the Wildcats in the 2016 Outback Bowl as a redshirt freshman against Tennessee.
