By Billy Hull on August 6, 2018

Division I Waipahu’s 34-13 win over preseason No. 7 Waianae on Friday night was the statement win of opening weekend of prep football in Hawaii. The Marauders, who won the OIA Division II title and advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament last year, snapped a five-game losing streak to the Seariders dating back to 2008 and were rewarded by voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. Campbell’s Delos Reyes eases into retirement

By Nick Abramo on August 5, 2018

Sam Delos Reyes was not crazily busy Saturday. Not like last year and all those years before. The Campbell Sabers were playing the Hilo Vikings in a season-opening football game, and Delos Reyes was not the man constantly making sure if everything — the whole production — was in order. Those days are gone, and Delos Reyes was relaxed to da max — or at least as much as he could be. He still had a duty to perform, and […]

Aina-Chaves off to record-breaking start

By Brian McInnis on August 5, 2018

St. Francis and Radford lined up in customary handshake lines at the end of a competitive first meeting, a cross-league, cross-division game that went 28-21 to the Saints at John E. Velasco Stadium. They got about halfway through the postgame ritual before it got chippy, broke down, and players went their separate ways, gesturing at each other, slightly tarnishing the season opener for both teams. Head coaches Kip Akana and Lon Passos shook hands, though. That — and a couple of […]

Game one is in the books for first-year head coach Sterling Carvalho. The former offensive coordinator has already left an imprint, merging the best of both worlds as No. 2 Kahuku overpowered Konawaena 61-9 on Saturday night at soggy Carleton Weimer Field. The Red Raiders were in sledgehammer mode early with running backs Wes Alo-Maiava and Toalei Lefau. Alo-Maiava rushed for 130 yards and touchdowns of 55, 5 and 5 yards in the first half, while Lefau rushed for a […]
